The announcements follow the release of three government reviews that all found Australia’s regulatory environment has failed to keep up with the changing payments landscape, where half of Australia’s population now make around AU$650 billion non-cash payments every single day. Given the changing landscape, Frydenburg said the federal government would respond to all 41 recommendations across the three reviews. The reforms will look to give Treasury expanded powers in overseeing payments policy and addressing emerging and future gaps in the payments regulatory framework....

Under the proposed laws, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) would gain an expanded set of powers for enforcing voluntary industry codes of practice should platforms’ actions prove inadequate. “This will encourage platforms to be ambitious in addressing the harms of disinformation and misinformation, while providing ACMA with the ability to hold platforms to account should their voluntary efforts prove inadequate or untimely,” Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said. The announcement of these laws come a year after large digital platforms, including Facebook, Google, TikTok, and Twitter, among others launched a voluntary code of practice for addressing misinformation online....

Update: TechCrunch reports Apple didn’t acquire Asaii, but rather, hired its founders. Apple has acquired Asaii, a music analytics company which claims to be able to identify future hit artists ten weeks before they chart. The company announced in September that it would be shutting down, but didn’t give any explanation at the time – though an acquisition was suspected … The news was broken by Axios, who notes that its source has been confirmed by LinkedIn profiles, including that of founder Sony Theakanath, which now lists his employer as ‘Apple Music at Apple....
