This will allow apps like Skype and Vonage (and Comcast VOIP?) to operate outside the bounds of Wifi. Skype VoIP over 3G works pretty well on the iPhone – we tried it way back when it wasn’t blocked. All that needs to happen now is an OS update by Apple. FXX delivers the first trailer for Archer: 1999, the latest re-imagining of the long-running animated series from creator Adam Reed. A new patent awarded to Apple today suggests that the company’s audio plans for future iPhones may go beyond reportedly ditching the 3.5mm headphone socket in favor of Lightning and Bluetooth. The patent is very densely-worded, but seemingly describes a method of getting higher-quality and higher-volume audio from speakers built into slimmer devices. Apple’s statement of the problem is clear enough. The language describing Apple’s proposed solution is less clear, but from a combination of this and the accompanying diagrams, I at least have a working theory of what is being suggested …...

Rocket, who is a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, is an intelligent anthropomorphic raccoon from the planet Halfworld. A feature that Apple originally introduced with iOS 6 but is implemented on a carrier by carrier basis is Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). Verizon and at least some Sprint iPhone users have a “Government Alerts” pane in Settings to enable both emergency alerts, such as those from FEMA, and AMBER alerts. Today, AT&T announced that the feature will be coming to its iPhone 5 and 4S users, as mandated by law, through an over the air software update....

The reason we haven’t heard or seen anything about it, is because AT&T is being extremely paranoid of how the service will run on their network. “Since I’ve worked here, I’ve never seen them be so worried about legalities,” my colleague explained. Regarding the service being available to Blackberry users, he says that it’s a different situation. Blackberry users haven’t slammed AT&T’s network by the millions in one quarter, in such large rushes....

Intel today took the wraps off of its new XMM7650 modem, which offers gigabit LTE performance and is the likely front-runner for the iPhone introduces later this year. As detailed by PC Mag, Intel’s new processor is a direct competitor to the Qualcomm Snapdragon X16. Apple, of course, is currently engaged in a legal battle with Qualcomm… The Intel XMM7560 is LTE category 16/13, meaning that it offers download speeds of 1Gbps and upload speeds of 225Mbps....

According to Digitimes, Taiwan-based Apple product manufacturer, Pegatron, has landed 15 million iPhone 5 orders from Apple. This is the same manufacturer that builds the CDMA iPhone 4. The report says that these 15 million devices are expected to ship in September, as we previously reported, and the upgrade will not be major. In addition, new “manpower” for factories has been hired to handle the iPhone 5 production load. The next version of the iPhone recently reached its final testing stage and is expected to pack the dual-core A5 processor found in the iPad 2, an improved camera with an 8 megapixel sensor (possibly Sony-built), and a design akin to the design of the iPhone 4....
