Anthony Mackie wishes Falcon’s death in Avengers: Infinity War was better than just turning to dirt and has his own ideas for how it should’ve happened. Mackie joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sam Wilson in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and quickly became a recurring face since then. After his debut, he made appearances in three straight MCU films: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and Captain America: Civil War.
His integration into the larger universe guaranteed that he would take part in the biggest MCU production to date - Infinity War. Falcon was part of Captain America’s secret team of heroes who were on the run and became involved in protecting Vision and the Mind Stone in Wakanda. Unfortunately for Falcon and half of the universe, the heroes were unable to stop Thanos from obtaining all six Infinity Stones and they disappeared when the Mad Titan snapped his fingers. These death scenes are some of Infinity War’s more emotional scenes, but Mackie wishes Falcon’s was a better death scene.
During an interview with BUILD Series, Mackie was asked if he felt good about possibly leaving the MCU behind after Infinity War, which is when he revealed his wish that Falcon’s death was cooler. He said, “I wish I died in a better way than turning to dirt. I feel like everybody who’s died has had this cool death scene.” Mackie then shared - partially in jest - his ideal death scene for Falcon. His idea is for Falcon to take a bullet to save Black Widow, resulting in her revealing feelings for him and kissing him - which would be followed by every Avenger coming into the scene to say he was their favorite before Tony Stark carried him away.
Mackie’s pitched heroic ending for Falcon sounds pretty great, but Falcon actually received a death on par with the other characters in Infinity War who were also snap victims. Other than Spider-Man’s extended scene, all of the other heroes simply faded away just like Falcon did, so their deaths weren’t particularly cool either. The good news for Mackie, though, is that this scene is highly unlikely to be Falcon’s actual death, so a better sendoff could come in the future.
It is all but officially confirmed that the dead characters from Infinity War are going to come back to life by the time Avengers: Endgame comes to a close. Many of these victims already have sequel standalone movies in the works or already filmed (as in the case of Spider-Man: Far From Home). Marvel Studios and everyone involved with these last two Avengers films are maintaining the ruse that this isn’t the case and these characters are actually dead, but that just isn’t true. That’s good news for Mackie. If he isn’t thrilled with how Falcon went out in Avengers: Infinity War, then he may just get a better death in some future MCU film.
