Concept art from Avengers: Infinity War shows off a few ideas for alternate weapons for Rocket Raccoon. Rocket, who is a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, is an intelligent anthropomorphic raccoon from the planet Halfworld. He is the result of a science experiment that genetically manipulated an animal to give it human intelligence and a bipedal body. He eventually met up with Star-Lord and joined him as one of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
In Avengers: Infinity War, Rocket Raccoon joins his fellow Guardians when they come to the aid of the Avengers, who are trying to prevent Thanos from obtaining the Infinity Stones that would give the Mad Titan the power to disintegrate half of the universe’s population. Although voiced by Bradley Cooper, Rocket’s movements are acted out by Sean Gunn to get the anthropomorphic character as realistic as possible before artists add CGI. Unfortunately, the real raccoon, Oreo, that served as Rocket’s model, recently passed away. One thing that that stands out about Rocket is his love for weapons: not only is he an expert, but he is also an excellent marksman who lives to fire off his big guns.
Although Rocket got a new costume look for Avengers: Endgame, he also got to try out a few new weapons before that, in Infinity War. Concept artist Fausto De Martini recently shared concept art of Rocket with ideas for a new rifle for the character in that film, using an approach that the weapon would be something made up of spare parts.
Rocket Raccoon’s story is far from over, though. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, he and the rest of the Guardians, now joined by Thor, are off to seek out their next big adventure. Director James Gunn, recently rehired for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, spoke about his attachment to the character, as well as being happy that he could finally play a part in finishing Rocket’s story arc in that film. Rocket has become a leader for the Guardians, as well as a father figure to the younger Groot.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will begin filming in 2020. Early speculation is that the movie will revolve around the search for Gamora, particularly considering that Thanos sacrificed her for the Soul Stone in Infinity War. An earlier version of Gamora turned up in Endgame, but she wasn’t present at the end of that movie, leaving her fate up in the air. Rocket will undoubtedly play a part in finding the missing Guardian.
