An extra scene from Avengers: Endgame reveals Smart Hulk with Tony Stark’s Dum-E robot. It’s been nine months since MCU’s culminating film rolled out in theaters, but it remains a favorite topic of conversation among fans due to the plethora of tiny details snuck into the movie. Meanwhile, new bits of information that weren’t even in the theatrical cut also garner interest from the public, including this latest one.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo with a script written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Endgame picked up right after the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War. At their lowest point, the remaining heroes go their separate ways and sit on their failure for five years. They spent the half decade time jump doing different things, but unlike Tony who made good on his promise to Pepper and married her, or Steve and Natasha who stayed on top of things, Bruce Banner used his time to meld himself with his Hulk alter-ego to become Smart Hulk. Endgame didn’t go into specifics about how he did it, but an extra clip from the Infinity Saga box set reveals the footage for testing how a fully CGI talking green creature would work on the big screen.
Included in Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga box set is a video of Smart Hulk test footage where the filmmakers were able to see how the concept of the character would translate in Endgame. A still from said clip reveals him tinkering on a computer while Tony’s Dum-E robot is seen in the background behind him. Check out the image shared by Reddit user, spiderjj45 below:
Fans will remember Dum-E as the first robot Stark built in his father’s workshop. Fans haven’t seen it in recent years, but it was a staple in the genius, billionaire’s workshop in his standalone film. Aside from having sentimental value, it also saved its owner’s life after Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) stole Stark’s second arc-reactor in Iron Man. Prior to the release of Endgame, a LEGO tie-in set revealed Dum-E with its creator, giving fans the idea that the robot would also appear in the film. Obviously, that wasn’t the case. This additional clip could explain that misunderstanding.
Typically, tie-in merchandise manufacturers are given an idea for their products in relation to the film. For instance, the Avengers’ white Quantum Realm suits were spoiled online long before they debuted in the movie’s first trailer. The same also happened with Pepper’s Rescue suit. And since the aforementioned scene was filmed, chances are it gave the LEGO makers an idea that Dum-E would be in Endgame. This test footage also appears to be set inside Tony’s workshop in his Malibu home, but that was destroyed in Iron Man 3 and is all the more evidence this scene was never intended to appear in Avengers: Endgame. While the culminating film revisited some memorable moments in MCU’s history, the Shane Black-project didn’t have much to do with the Infinity Stones so there was really no reason for them to time travel to its events. Still, it’s a fun touch to see Dum-E again, and perhaps the next time we see Ruffalo’s Smart Hulk he’ll have the robot working in his own lab.
