Thanos actor Josh Brolin talks about the status of his MCU contract with the upcoming release of Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios had been teasing Thanos as early as the first Thor, with his first on-screen appearance in 2012’s The Avengers. But it wasn’t until 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy that the Mad Titan first got a part in a film that’s basically not a glorified cameo. Even after that, the public had to wait four more years before he properly debuted in last year’s Avengers: Infinity War. Fortunately, between the actor’s acting and the impressive CG-work on the giant purple villain, he was an instant hit.

Infinity War ended with Thanos accomplishing his goal - successfully wiping out half of life in the universe with the use of the completed Infinity Gauntlet with the hopes of bringing balance to it. It was the first time that the MCU heroes suffer real defeat and they intend to make an epic comeback in Endgame. With that, the upcoming Joe and Anthony Russo-directed and Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus-written intends to put the heroes on offense and Thanos on defense. But regardless of what happens in the film, will fans still see the Mad Titan around in the franchise? Brolin offers some information with regard to that matter in a new interview.

Speaking with Variety during the Endgame Hollywood premiere, Brolin was asked about how many more MCU films he’s signed up for. The actor was initially playful with his answer, but he eventually revealed that he’s on a per-film status which means that after Avengers 4, it’s up in the air whether or not he’ll return in future movies. “10. For the next 10 years, doing one a year. Kevin Feige, by the way, you hear that? No, I’m good. I’m on a one movie to one movie basis so we’ll see what happens after this movie,” he revealed. That said, the actor seemed eager to continue playing the role based on how gratifying and pleasant his experience was on portraying the character. “It’s a character that turned out to be sympathetic that nobody thought would be sympathetic and that was really nice. It turned into a multi-dimensional character and nobody thought it was supposed to be,” he explained.

Whether or not fans will see Thanos in the MCU past Endgame remains to be seen, but for Brolin, he’s not going anywhere just yet. With Disney’s successful acquisition of Fox’s TV and movie assets, the rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four and all their tie-in characters are back with Marvel - that includes Deadpool. Brolin also plays Nathan Summers aka Cable in the Ryan Reynolds-spearheaded franchise and with Marvel Studios head honcho going on the record to say that they have no plans of changing the course of the series, chances are that the time-traveling mutant will continue to appear in future films like the in-development spin-off, X-Force and maybe even Deadpool 3 depending on its story.

Considering the nature of the MCU, it’s not outside the realm of possibility to see Brolin as Thanos again moving forward. It would be such a waste to not bring him back after years of build up to the character and eventually nailing his introduction. While Infinity War devoted much of its time fleshing out the character and Avengers: Endgame potentially continuing it, there’s still so much that’s unknown about the Mad Titan. With his origins tied to the upcoming film The Eternals, one would think that it won’t be difficult to integrate him in future storytelling in whatever way possible.
