Cassie Lang was almost added during Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) massive funeral scene in Avengers: Endgame. Scott Lang’s (Paul Rudd) daughter has been a fan-favorite character since she debuted in 2015’s Ant-Man. Abby Ryder Fortson initially played the part, reprising the role in last year’s Ant-Man and The Wasp. But with Endgame enacting a five-year time-jump, the film reunited with a grown-up version of the character played by Emma Furhmann.

Like her father, Cassie survived Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) deadly snap that wiped out half of life in the universe in Avengers: Infinity War, albeit Scott’s survival was primarily chalked to his timing being in the Quantium Realm. The pair’s reunion is among the most subtly emotional scenes in the film, as his now teenage daughter was Scott’s first contact to the widely changed world. After their first meeting, viewers didn’t see Cassie until the end of the movie after the Mad Titan was already defeated during a montage over Tony Stark’s farewell letter. But apparently, she was almost included in Iron Man’s funeral as shared recently by Feige.

Speaking with Empire Magazine in celebration of Endgame’s home entertainment release, the MCU architect talks about the creative process of making Infinity War and its sequel. And one bit of information he shared was that they contemplated on digitally adding teenage Cassie during Stark’s emotional funeral. However, they ultimately opted against the idea since it was more of a gathering of heroes.

It doesn’t make that much of a difference whether or not Cassie was in attendance during Stark’s send-off. They have never met, and she’s not a superhero (yet) like her father. Clint Barton’s (Jeremy Renner) complete family was in attendance because not only did Stark got to know them in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) were the reason why they were reunited with their father with a new chance at a life all together.

“We did at one point toy with putting Cassie there. At one point we thought of digitally adding her so it’s the family, but we thought, ‘This is the heroes celebrating the other heroes and the loss of Tony’, so we didn’t do it. Aside from Smart Hulk and Rocket and Groot, everybody’s actually standing there.”

All that being said, considering that Avengers: Endgame’s narrative was primarily rooted on family and personal relationships, it may have helped to drive the point that Cassie and Scott have a future together because of Stark’s sacrifice. And that’s a tragic, albeit effective juxtaposition to Morgan (Lexi Rabe) having to grow up without her own father for more people to have theirs. In addition to that, while there’s no official word yet that Cassie will eventually take on the mantle of a superhero like she did in the comic books, it may have helped Marvel Studios lay the grounds for a potential Young Avengers film if she was there alongside other  possible members of the team like Harley Keener (Ty Simpskins) and even Morgan.
