A newly released behind-the-scenes video from Avengers: Endgame sees Robert Downey Jr. seemingly practicing his delivery for Tony Stark’s final message. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo with a script written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the three-hour blockbuster also served as the final outings for some of the MCU’s founding heroes, including its inaugural one.

In the aftermath of their loss to Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Infinity War, the heroes went their separate ways to spend the next five years. Following his long obsession with the threat that the Mad Titan posed, Tony was free of his nagging worry about the worst since it finally happened. Sad as that was, their defeat finally allowed him to focus on his personal life and impending marriage to Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). The pair married and had a child, Morgan (Lexi Rabe). However, when the idea of the Time Heist came up thanks to Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Stark was forced to suit back up in the hopes of bringing back those who perished in the Decimation, including Peter Parker (Tom Holland).

The Avengers succeeded in their endeavor, and also defeated Thanos in the process. However, it’s not without some major sacrifices including a personal one from Tony. He dies after wielding the power of six Infinity Stones to ensure that the villain won’t be able to threaten the main MCU timeline. And as part of the somber funeral, his family and closest allies get to watch his final message to them. Shared on Instagram by Jimmy Rich is a video of Downey practicing his Endgame lines and it sounds like it’s for that aforementioned scene, watch it below:

It’s worth noting there’s no confirmation that this bit was supposed to be part of Tony’s parting message. Sadly, the lines Downey was rehearsing in the video didn’t make it in the final cut of Endgame, although its earnest message and tone fits well with the content of the character’s moving speech in the movie. In addition to that, there’s really no other part in the film where he’s able to deliver a big speech like this as it’s typically Captain America’s (Chris Evans) job to do the pep talk. In any case, it’s great that the Russos were able to include Tony’s farewell at the very end, especially with the content of his message also had some meta side to it.

Regardless of the message, what’s evident in this video is Downey’s dedication to his MCU role. For more than 10 years, he was consistent in his performance - it didn’t matter if it was in his solo film or an ensemble one. The franchise would definitely look and feel different without Tony Stark in it, but as the universe continues to evolve, fans would jus have to look forward to what else Marvel Studios has in store for them after Avengers: Endgame.
