A new magazine cover reveals a breathtaking view of Thanos’ farm in Avengers: Endgame. After successfully killing half of everyone in the universe in Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos has retired in order to live a quiet life on a farm.
After spending a great deal of time traveling from planet to planet and committing horrific acts of genocide, Thanos and the Black Order teamed up to find all six Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War. After a challenging battle with the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, and the forces of Wakanda, Thanos finally achieved his goal. Avengers: Infinity War ended with the defeat of the Avengers and a triumphant Thanos watching the sunrise on a distant planet. Satisfied with his victory, Thanos no longer has any need to continue fighting.
The subscriber cover of the new issue of Empire Magazine features a painting of Thanos watching the sunrise on his farm. The painting also includes the Thanos scarecrow from the first Avengers: Endgame trailer. For the most part, the farm resembles a beautiful landscape that could be found on Earth, with one major difference being the enormous moon in the sky.
Thanos’ retirement on the farm was taken directly from the comics, though the circumstances were quite different. In Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos didn’t take off his armor and retire until after “The Snap” was undone and he was defeated by Adam Warlock. While living as a humble farmer, Thanos took some time for introspection and managed to find a measure of inner peace.
The Mad Titan hasn’t had much of a presence in the trailers for Avengers: Endgame, even though they revolve around the consequences of his actions. Though little is known of his role in the upcoming movie, it’s most likely that Thanos is right where Avengers: Infinity War left him. When asked what he would do after assembling the Infinity Gauntlet and wiping out half the universe, Thanos spoke of his wish to “watch the sun rise on a grateful universe.”
Of course, Thanos is about to discover that the universe isn’t nearly as grateful as he had hoped. The latest trailer for Avengers: Endgame shows the main characters still dealing with the fallout from Avengers: Infinity War, and Captain America says that they’re unable to move on. At the end of the trailer, the Avengers are shown suiting up and preparing to take the fight to the Mad Titan, which may bring Thanos’ peaceful existence on the farm to an abrupt end.
