Avengers: Endgame is the biggest preseller in Fandango history, breaking a record previously set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That’s probably not a surprise to Marvel fans, who have waited over a decade for the movie that wraps up the original Avengers’ story. The film also sold out thousands of screenings at theaters before its opening and even prompted some AMC locations to add round-the-clock showings to accommodate fans.
Endgame follows up the story set up in Avengers: Infinity War. In that movie, the Avengers attempt to prevent Thanos from obtaining all the Infinity Stones because doing so would give him ultimate power. They fail in their mission and Thanos ends up collecting the stones and using them with his gauntlet, which allows him to snap his fingers and destroy half the universe’s population, including members of the Avengers team. Endgame picks up where that film left off, with a world devastated by Thanos’ snap and the Avengers wondering how they can make things right again and defeat the Mad Titan. Although it might have seemed hard to follow Infinity War with a worthy successor, early reviews of Endgame before its release were already citing the film as “epic” and something that Marvel fans would have to see for themselves.
Endgame is also now the biggest preseller of tickets in Fandango history, with fans buying up tickets in advance to guarantee themselves a seat to what is essentially the biggest movie event of the year. Endgame also broke Fandango’s record for best first-day sales and sold five times more tickets during its first week of pre-sales than Infinity War. Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis said:
Endgame is also highly anticipated because it’s closing out the end of an era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Phase 3 doesn’t officially end until after Spider-Man: Far From Home releases, it wraps up a series of stories initially set into motion way back in 2008 with the first Iron Man film. Endgame is the end of an era, so much that Marvel didn’t even add the usual post-credits scenes to the movie (although fans will still want to stick around while the credits roll for a surprise).
“It’s pacing to be our biggest box office weekend of all time. We’ve never seen so many new screens and new showtimes added to meet the demand. I expect fans to go back for repeat viewings of Endgame throughout the weekend to catch all the things they missed in the film’s three-hour running time.”
Endgame is currently breaking international box office records, too. With a massive $169 million brought in on opening day overseas, it opened #1 in every market and broke the record for the highest industry single day movie of all time in countries all over the world. There is no stopping the juggernaut that is Endgame, and it is well on its way to becoming the biggest movie of all time.
