Marvel Studios have unleashed a grand total of 40 new Twitter emojis to celebrate the forthcoming release of Avengers: Endgame in theaters worldwide. The Marvel Cinematic Universe delivered a shocking conclusion to last year’s Infinity War, as the Mad Titan Thanos succeeded in collecting the universe’s Infinity Stones and, with a single snap of his fingers, wiped out half of all life. The long-awaited continuation to that story will finally arrive later this month, as Avengers: Endgame sees the MCU’s remaining heroes united in a desperate attempt to defeat Thanos at the second time of asking.
The promotional campaign for the latest Avengers installment is now reaching its…er, endgame and has been punctuated by a steadfast attempt to avoid giving away even the slightest plot hint or spoiler. The film’s trailers and TV spots have confirmed that Ant-Man somehow escaped the Quantum Realm, showcase the Avengers in suits that could indicate a return to that very place and highlight newcomer Captain Marvel integrating herself into the group. Other than that, very little is known about the film and Marvel Studios have succeeded in getting the whole world talking about their new movie while actually revealing hardly anything about it.
Marvel have now teamed up with Twitter to release a set of special emojis created by @100Soft to promote Endgame’s impending release. The full set includes: an Avengers logo, franchise head Kevin Feige, Thanos, the Infinity Gauntlet, Iron Man, War Machine, Happy Hogan, Pepper Potts, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Hulk, Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Falcon, Red Skull, Thor, Loki, Valkyrie, Miek, Korg (!), Black Widow, Hawkeye/Ronin, Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, Wong, Ant-Man, Wasp, Spider-Man, Groot, Nebula, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Star Lord, Drax, Mantis, Black Panther, MBaku, Okoye, Shuri and Captain Marvel.
Custom Twitter emojis are becoming an increasingly common way of promoting a film and only a few days ago, Detective Pikachu pulled the same trick, albeit with a comparatively paltry offering of 5 characters. This marketing technique is something film fans will likely see more of in the coming years, as custom emojis offer a fun and relatively inexpensive way to let the audience visually promote a movie as they play with the tiny new images.
Of course, Endgame’s marketing has been thoroughly analyzed for any potential plot clues and even this set of emojis could reveal something about what the movie has in store. Namely, they may indicate some surprise side characters who will be making an Endgame appearance. While many on this list have already been confirmed for the second round against Thanos, it’s interesting to see Red Skull (listed as Stonekeeper) included. The Captain America villain made a surprise appearance in Infinity War and while his emoji could just be a recognition of that, it might also hint towards a return in Endgame.
Unsurprisingly, the most popular inclusion within the emoji selection was everyone’s favorite rock-based revolutionary, Korg, and the character soon began trending on the social media platform after the emojis were released. Korg appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, played by director Taika Waititi, and although he wasn’t seen in Infinity War, his and Miek’s emojis could suggest a welcome return in Avengers: Endgame. Hopefully this time he’ll print out enough flyers.
