Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones lead the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Award nominees. After a record-breaking year in both film and television, the nearly three-decade old awards ceremony will recognize two of the strongest contenders, with plenty of love to go around for other mega-franchises and smaller scale fare alike.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards (originally referred to as the MTV Movie Awards before television became too much of a juggernaut to ignore) has been handing out golden popcorn statues since 1992. Similar to the Peoples Choice Awards, the MTV Movie & TV Awards allows the audience to vote online, with winners representing public opinion, as opposed to industry professionals. Over the years, Oscar-winning films like Titanic and Pulp Fiction have won Best Movie, sharing the honor with films that were ignored by the Academy entirely, like Wedding Crashers, Scream, and The Fault in Our Stars. Now, the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards are recognizing a whole new batch of contenders.

The list of nominees for the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards include a wide variety of genres in lead categories, including horror (Us), comedy (Schitt’s Creek), and animation (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). However, the most nominations go to both Avengers:Endgame and Game of Thrones, totaling 4 and 3 nominations, respectively - which goes to show how diverse this year’s show will be, given the multitude of other films and shows in the running. Hosted by Shazam!‘s Zachary Levi, the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards also introduces some new categories to the show. The new categories include Reality Royalty, Most Meme-able Moment, and Best Real-Life Hero, which recognizes everyone from Lindsay Lohan and Ruth Bader Ginsberg to shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race and The Bachelor. Fans can vote online at vote.mtv.com, and also through Twitter and Facebook Messenger by direct messaging @MTVAwards.

As for what movies and TV shows stand the biggest chance, it’s tough to say. While Avengers: Endgame is the most recent and successful nominee in the category for Best Movie, more or less guaranteeing the most votes, Best Performance in a Movie has recent Academy Award-winner Rami Malek up against equally strong contenders like Lady Gaga and Lupita Nyong’o, while Best Hero’s two Marvel nominees (Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel) could easily cancel each other out, handing the golden popcorn over to DC (Shazam!). That is, unless Arya Stark’s recent victory on Game of Thrones doesn’t guarantee her the spot given how celebrated her big moment was during the Battle of Winterfell.
