New Avengers: Endgame footage was shown to Disney shareholders, and a description of what was included has now arrived. With Captain Marvel hitting theaters this weekend, Marvel Studios and fans of their Marvel Cinematic Universe alike will soon put their attention completely on what comes next. The followup to Avengers: Infinity War has been near the forefront of the minds of fans since Thanos snapped half of all life away.
Marvel has so far taken a less-is-more approach when it comes to Endgame’s marketing plan, with only one teaser trailer and a Super Bowl TV spot released so far. The footage has shown the bare minimum of the plot to this point and has even gone as far as to exclude several characters we know will appear - and that doesn’t even account for all the currently dead ones who are expected to return. What they have shown is Iron Man and Nebula stranded in space, while Captain America, Black Widow, Bruce Banner, War Machine, and Ant-Man are at Avengers HQ - with Thor and Rocket appearing to be on their own adventure.
Disney CEO Bob Iger showed new footage from Endgame to Disney shareholders at its Annual Shareholders Meeting today, and while the footage has not been released online, ComicBook obtained a description of what was shown. The scenes include some major reveals, including Captain Marvel and Nebula being on Earth, before some of the team decides to go to space. Read their full description below:
In addition to ComicBook’s description, Scott Ladewig attended the meeting and shared some additional information on the footage. He added that Rocket is able to track Thanos’ location thanks to the energy the Infinity Gauntlet gives off when he used the glove. Also, Bruce Banner is part of the exchange, and when he asks why they’ll be victorious this time, Captain Marvel states because they have her. Carol also explains where she’s been for the last two decades, and Thor quickly voices his approval of her.
The footage starts out with the Avengers sitting in the room at the Avengers compound we saw in the first teaser and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is in attendance. Nebula (Karen Gillan) mentions that she thinks Thanos would go to “the garden” after he completed his plan.
Captain Marvel speaks up and tells the group they need to go there and use the stones to undo. The footage then showed Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Nebula, Captain America (Chris Evans), War Machine (Don Cheadle), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) in space. Rocket says something along the lines of “Who has never been in space before? Raise your hand.”
The footage then closes with Rocket warning those who haven’t been in space to not puke on his ship.
The arrival of Captain Marvel and Nebula on Earth is a huge deal at this point, as they have not previously been shown on the planet in the marketing. Carol Danvers has been completely absent from the footage, but this makes it clear Disney will be ready to reveal more about her role after Captain Marvel hits theaters. Nebula’s inclusion on the team is also quite surprising, especially since there is no mention of Tony Stark.
But, the part of the footage that may be most revealing is Captain Marvel’s proposed plan to stop Thanos. She wants the team to go to Thanos’ location and get the Infinity Stones for themselves. This confirms what many have expected to be the team’s plan in some form, but this would be a rather straightforward approach - and one that doesn’t include time travel or the Quantum Realm. Since both are believed to be heavily involved in Endgame’s plot, there appears to still be some missing element at this point, which could be why Iron Man and Ant-Man are not mentioned.
This footage also reads as full scenes, so fans should not expect this exact footage to be the highly anticipated second trailer. Marvel may very well use some of this footage in the next trailer, but they’ll likely include additional new scenes too. Either way, this footage appears to answer some questions about Avengers: Endgame, while also raising brand new ones.
