One Marvel fan has explained the Sony/Disney Spider-Man deal by using a scene from Avengers: Endgame. Sony and Disney first did business together with Tom Holland’s debut as Spider-Man in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. That deal allowed for the character of Spider-Man, whose movie rights are owned by Sony, to be lent out to Disney’s Marvel Studios for use in the MCU. In return, Sony would continue to produce Spider-Man’s standalone films. The first, Spider-Man: Homecoming, came the year after Captain America: Civil War. It was well-received by both fans and critics, with many praising Holland’s performance specifically. He then starred in Avengers: Infinity War, where his character was one of the many killed by Thanos’s snap.
However, Spider-Man made his triumphant return in Avengers: Endgame, allowing Holland to star in Spider-Man: Far From Home soon after. For several weeks, fans believed that Avengers: Endgame would be Spider-Man’s last appearance in the larger MCU, as talks broke down between Sony and Disney. However, earlier this week, the studios struck a new deal. This one will let Sony and Marvel co-produce a third Spider-Man film and let the character appear in at least one more MCU film. That movie may be his last appearance in the MCU, as Marvel head Kevin Feige is reportedly looking to finish up Spider-Man’s story. However, Sony will probably continue to use the character after the new deal expires.
Reddit user AllOutMovies offered a very Marvel interpretation of the deal between Sony and Disney. They posted a popular scene from Avengers: Endgame where Iron Man returns Captain America’s shield, but with some fun changes. Thanks to the magic of editing, the scene becomes about Disney and Sony’s offers to one another, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man playing the role of Sony and Chris Evans’ Captain America taking on Disney. The video ends with “Sony” suggesting that “Disney” “go out there and buy Warner Bros or something,” along with a handshake declaring it’s “for the fans.”
Despite the temporary setback with Sony, both Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home contributed to a massive year for Marvel and its characters. Avengers: Endgame broke numerous box office records during its run this past spring, eventually passing Titanic at the global box office. This year, Marvel also introduced the world to Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel and took to San Diego Comic-Con to announce several films premiering in the next few years. These include the long-awaited Black Widow film, The Eternals with Angelina Jolie, and Thor: Love and Thunder, which will feature Natalie Portman wielding Mjolnir as Mighty Thor.
Fans’ excitement for these upcoming films and Spider-Man’s return to the MCU show just how passionate they are. However, the fan edit of the Sony/Disney deal also shows that they like to have fun and not take things too seriously. Some fans were understandably heartbroken over Spider-Man’s surprise exit, but hopefully videos like this one help lessen the sting. It doesn’t hurt that it features Captain America and Iron Man, two Avengers: Endgame characters with the most baggage who eventually made up. If they could do it, it makes sense that Sony and Disney did too.
