Katherine Langford says Iron Man’s deleted Soulworld scene from Avengers: Endgame was added to Disney+ in response to fan demand. The Love, Simon and 13 Reasons Why actor was one of the last major cast members confirmed for Endgame ahead of its release, leading a number of people to speculate she was playing someone of importance. In fact, some went so far as to predict she would make her debut as a key character for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (like Kate Bishop) in the film. Ultimately, however, she wasn’t included in Endgame’s theatrical cut.

Shortly after the movie’s release, Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo spilled the beans: Langford had been cast as a grown-up Morgan Stark who appeared to her father, Iron Man himself, in Soulworld, right after he uses the Infinity Gauntlet to snap Thanos and his army out of existence (but, obviously, right before he dies from doing exactly that). Then, unexpectedly, fans got to see this scene for themselves when it was added to Endgame on the Disney+ streaming service this month. Now, Langford has finally spoken up about the scene’s release.

During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this week (where she was promoting her role in Rian Johnson’ murder mystery, Knives Out), Fallon asked Langford about her deleted Endgame scene and its recent unveiling on Disney+. He went on to claim fans are loving the scene so far, which prompted Langford to note that, from what she understands, the scene was released specifically because of the demand:

In truth, the general response to Endgame’s deleted Soulworld scene hasn’t been quite as glowing as Fallon suggested it was on his show. Some people feel the scene was deleted for a good reason, citing its (arguably) stilted and somewhat incoherent dialogue. Others have further pointed out the scene raises more questions than it answers, and might even introduce a plot hole involving the Infinity Stones and how they work when activated by Thanos’ Gauntlet. On the opposite end of the spectrum, other people find Tony and grown-up Morgan’s farewell to be quite tear-jerking, feeling it compliments a later scene where a young Morgan is shown a holographic recording made by her dad earlier in the film (as a precaution, in case he was killed during the final battle with Thanos).

“I heard that’s why it’s out, though. It was literally, like, that’s what I was told, it was out because people wanted to see it, which is also really cool…”

Langford is right, though: fans very much wanted to see her deleted scene as Morgan Stark, so it was a smart call on Marvel and Disney’s part to make it available to them via Disney+ (giving them yet another reason to sign up for the newly-launched service). Besides, getting to debate and discuss the value - or lack thereof - of deleted scenes is all part of the fun for movie buffs, and people are clearly enjoying weighing in with their thoughts about this particular Endgame moment, having finally gotten to watch it for themselves. And much like the larger discussion around the film, the conversation about Lanford’s brief appearance will surely continue for the foreseeable future (which is worth something, in and of itself).
