Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo say they currently do not have plans to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The brothers have been integral players in the franchise since 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, following that up with Captain America: Civil War and the one-two punch of Infinity War and Endgame. Many Marvel fans consider their installments to be among the best in the series, as they increasingly got more ambitious and grand in scope. Winter Soldier was seen as a grounded political thriller, and Endgame is the sprawling, epic comic book movie event of the decade.

Much has already been said about how Endgame could potentially mark the end for much of the old Phase 1 guard, like Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth, but the actors may not be the only ones leaving the franchise. For the first time in years, the Russos do not have a major Marvel tentpole on their schedule, and it sounds like things will stay that way for a while.

In an interview with Games Radar, the Russos were asked about their future in the MCU. It was Anthony who announced the siblings are moving on to fresh horizons now:

The Russos have maintained they would be interested in coming back for a Secret Wars adaptation, but it doesn’t sound like that’s in the cards right now. And, as strong a fit as they’ve proven to be in the MCU, the Russos have most certainly earned a reprieve from helming these grueling, time-consuming tentpoles and would probably be interested in tackling other kinds of films. Case in point: they’ve already lined up a new drama called Cherry, starring Tom Holland as a war veteran struggling with PTSD and drug addiction who starts robbing banks. That will clearly be a much smaller-scale film than anything the Russos have done for Marvel, but still has the potential to be a riveting and emotionally engaging project. It’ll be interesting to see what else the directors decide to do, as they’ve undoubtedly earned a tremendous amount of industry clout for their Avengers gigs.

“It’s our Endgame, at least for now. We don’t have any plans for now to make any more Marvel movies. It certainly may come up in the future at some point. We have a wonderful working relationship with [Marvel Studios] and a great passion for what they’re doing.”

Fans will probably be sad to hear this is the end of the road for the Russos and the MCU, but it may benefit both parties moving forward. In the case of Marvel, one way to ensure the franchise stays fresh and viable after the Infinity Saga is to bring in new creative voices that can bring their unique perspectives to the films. For Phase 4, Marvel has already brought in Cate Shortland for Black Widow, Chloé Zhao for The Eternals, and Destin Daniel Cretton for Shang-Chi. Remember, there was a point in time when the Russos were MCU newcomers, so perhaps any of these talented filmmakers can become the next leader of franchise as Kevin Feige and company enter the post-Endgame era.
