Despite what Mark Ruffalo claimed, co-director Joe Russo says there’s only one ending to Avengers: Endgame. Prior to the film’s release, Ruffalo claimed to have shot five different endings to the movie. At the time, he also said that his script had some fake scenes in it, while others were missing entirely. Though it would have been easy to think he was making a joke about the movie’s alternate endings, in the same interview he implied that Captain America gets married in the movie. Those who have seen Avengers: Endgame know that this basically does happen, so Ruffalo may have thought there was some truth to his statements about the film’s endings as well.

Ruffalo has a long history of both trolling fans with fake spoilers and accidentally revealing plot points of upcoming movies. He famously streamed the first 10 minutes of Thor: Ragnarok when he forgot to end an Instagram live before the film’s premiere. This year, he played a joke on April Fool’s Day, by making fans think he was about to share a spoiler. Ruffalo’s developed a good sense of humor about his reputation for spilling the beans and even seems to enjoy using it to have some fun with fans.

However, in a sit down with ComicBook, Joe Russo, who directed Avengers: Endgame with his brother, Anthony, put this particular Ruffalo claim to bed. When asked whether or not they shot fake footage for the blockbuster film, Russo said:

Russo also went on to defend Ruffalo, pointing out, “It gets complicated for him because he’s in a motion capture suit, and sometimes we can throw him in a motion capture stage where he’s not working with anybody, so it can get disorienting about, like, what’s happening in the story.”

“It’s not footage that is shot purposely for being fake footage. If there’s something that works for a trailer, we’ll do it for a trailer, but not, you know, like Ruffalo talking about we shot five endings…we don’t have the energy to shoot one ending…we’re crawling to the finish line just to shoot one ending.”

With filming of both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame occurring back to back, it’s understandable that some actors would forget what was filmed for each movie and where those scenes took place. Plus, with so many characters to service, it’s no wonder that things were cut or moved around from the script to the final product. Ruffalo himself said that he filmed a death scene for Hulk in Infinity War that obviously wasn’t used. Meanwhile, Katherine Langford, who was due to appear in Endgame, had her role as the teenage version of Tony and Pepper’s daughter, Morgan, cut entirely.

Regardless of what ended up on the editing room floor, fans seem to be responding to the film’s final cut. It continues to break box office records and neared the $2.2 billion mark in worldwide gross this past weekend. In doing so, the movie overtook James Cameron’s Titanic to become the second best-selling movie ever. Avengers: Endgame’s only competition now is another Cameron film, 2009’s Avatar. Though that record will be harder to break, Avengers: Endgame is still projected to do so.
