Fans can now see what the Chitauri Gorillas from Avengers: Endgame look like under their mask. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo with the script penned by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the ensemble film wraps up the main Infinity Saga story with a massive battle between the Avengers and Thanos. Both sides bring in all their allies to one massive battle at the movie’s final act, and while Iron Man and MCU’s founding characters bring in almost every other hero in the franchise, the Mad Titan also brought in all his minions. That includes various extraterrestrial creatures like the Black Order, Outriders, and Chitauris.

Debuting in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers from 2012 as Loki’s mindless army, the public belatedly learned that they were lent to him by Thanos. Years after their loss to the Avengers in the Battle of New York, the Mad Titan brought them back to Earth for another scuffle with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Endgame. This time, however, they came prepared with the additional reinforcement courtesy of the Chitauri Gorillas which are large alien creatures whose bodies were outfitted with cybernetic implants and amor platings. Some of their suits also covers their faces, and now fans can take a peak at what they look like under those masks

Shared on his official Instagram account by Endgame concept artist, Jerad S. Marantz are his illustrations on what Chitauri Gorillas’ faces actually look like. According to him, these are last minute designs he made for the film, and while he worked hard on this look, he says he’s happy that the filmmakers opted to keep their masks in the movie. Check out his creations below:

This creature design is genuinely scary and seeing them in the film itself would’ve been cool. The problem is, with the sheer amount of extraterrestrials in the final Endgame battle, it would’ve been difficult to distinguish it from the rest of Thanos’ army in just a split-second focus or a wide-frame shot. All other aliens admittedly looked the same from afar. That’s not a jab on their designs. As seen in these images, there’s a high level of detail put into creating them. However, with a jam-packed action sequence with almost all MCU characters going in an all-out battle, it’s difficult to appreciate the different creature designs. So, the best that the filmmakers did was to differentiate these beasts by outfitting them with a mask that gave them glowing eyes.

After a relentless Avengers: Endgame battle, Tony Stark’s snap, which unfortunately also killed him, ultimately defeated Thanos and the rest of his minions - that included the remaining Chitauri Gorillas. What’s curious if there’s a chance that they, alongside the other creatures introduced in the twin Avengers sequels like the Black Order, can somehow factor in the MCU’s future. As of now, there’s no indication that this is a possibility, but if any upcoming narrative calls for it, Marvel Studios would find a way to bring them back.
