Avengers: Endgame broke Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ presales record on Fandango in less than six hours. The culmination of eleven years of storytelling, Endgame will bring the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has called it, the Infinity Saga) to a close. It will further serve as a conclusion to last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, which ended with Thanos wiping out half of all life in the universe, leaving it to the remaining superheroes - including, the original team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes - to pick up the pieces.

Needless to say, fans are excited for Endgame and crashed several websites (like AMC’s) when the film’s tickets went on sale earlier this morning, April 2. While the MCU has already grossed a cumulative $18.5 billion at the global box office to date (going back to the first Iron Man), the latest Avengers movie is expected to smash several records previously set by the comic book-based franchise. In fact, it’s already broken one record that was previously held by another Disney-owned juggernaut in the form of Star Wars.

Fandango is reporting that Endgame broke the previous 24-hours presales record set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in its first six hours alone. As it stands, Endgame now ranks number one among 24-hour presales for the ticket company, right ahead of The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Avengers: Infinity War. It’s little wonder that ticket-selling websites were crashing left and right this morning (Fandango included), with a turnout like that.

This news only supports the current (record-breaking) box office projections for Endgame, both at the domestic and international box office. Infinity War holds the current U.S. opening weekend record with a three day take of $257 million, but it sounds like Endgame should have little trouble surpassing that, and may even surpass the recent estimate of $282 million. Endgame is further expected to set a new record at the global box office with an $840 million opening, due to the fact that it’ll be premiering in China over the same weekend that it opens in pretty much every other major market around the globe. Assuming the film’s reviews are as good as Infinity War’s (if not better), that will only further benefit Endgame’s commercial performance this month.

As much as The Force Awakens’ opening weekend was an event (being both the first Star Wars movie released in ten years and the long-awaited sequel to Return of the Jedi), it’s not surprising that Endgame is already outperforming it. Moviegoers of all ages have spent the last decade watching Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Hulk, and everyone in-between save the day on the big screen, making the completion of their journeys (whatever form it might take) a happening with proper cross-generational appeal. Even a franchise as massive as Star Wars has never found itself in a position quite like this, going back to The Force Awakens and its release, three and a half years ago. In that sense, it’s only fitting that Avengers: Endgame be the movie that upstages it.
