Concept art for Avengers: Endgame shows the Frost Giants were almost included in the final battle. The epic sequence saw most of the MCU’s heroes take on Thanos and his army in an attempt to stop him from destroying the universe (again). In addition to showing the return of all characters who were previously killed by Thanos’ snap, it included additional fighters like Wakandans, remaining Asgardians, and Masters of the Mystic Arts, making the battle the biggest one the MCU has seen yet.

The Frost Giants have only appeared in one MCU film so far, 2011’s Thor, and they played a large role in the plot. Thor’s initial attack on the Frost Giants (one of Asgard’s greatest enemies) led to his banishment to Earth. The Frost Giant king, Laufey, was one of the film’s antagonists, and, most importantly, Thor’s brother Loki was revealed to be Laufey’s son and therefor a Frost Giant himself. This discovery was what caused Loki to spiral and seek control of Asgard (along with his adoptive father Odin’s approval) by destroying Jotunheim. He was unsuccessful, and the Frost Giants lived on.

There was a chance Endgame could have featured the reappearance of the Frost Giants. Concept artist Jared S. Marantz shared some initial designs for the Frost Giants, which explored the idea of Frost Giants having the ability to create armor for themselves out of ice. Check out the designs below:

Including the Frost Giants in the final battle would’ve been a nice touch that connects all the way back to Phase One of the MCU. Considering how important Frost Giants were to the first Thor, it’s a little disappointing they were never mentioned again, especially since Loki actually is one. The Loki series on Disney+ could provide an opportunity to see them again, since the show is supposed to dive deeper into his character than ever before. Discovering he is a Frost Giant is one of the most crucial moments in his arc, and it would be unfortunate if Loki didn’t acknowledge it.

The possibility of the Frost Giants appearing in Avengers: Endgame’s final battle presents an interesting question: Which side would they have been fighting on? Their villainous nature in both Thor and the comics suggest they would be on Thanos’ side, but the Frost Giants were likely affected by Thanos’ snap as well. Could there have been a chance the Frost Giants almost fought alongside the Avengers? It’s a possibility, but unlikely. Odds are, they would have been another part of Thanos’ army, destined to be wiped away by Iron Man’s fatal snap. At least they would have looked cool.
