Now that there are two trailers for Avengers: Endgame, fans are looking at every little detail they can to make theories about what will happen to their favorite characters. While neither trailer has given away much, Captain America has been the focus of both of them. This has many fans speculating about the fate of Steve Rogers and what Avengers: Endgame will hold for him. While we won’t know the ending for sure until the film is released, we’ve collected a list of clues that are hinted at Captain Americ in Endgame.

Here are 8 Things The Trailers Hinted About Captain America in Avengers: Endgame.

HE’S GOING TO THERAPY, AND DOESN’T SEEM VERY HAPPY ABOUT IT

After the shots of a half-ruined Manhattan, the teaser trailer from the Super Bowl spot shows what appears to be a group therapy session. Outside the door, a poster reads, “Where do we go, now that they’re gone?” Then, there’s a shot that shows Captain America sitting in that room maybe getting therapy himself. Therapy would not be out of the question for Steve Rogers after all the losses he’s endured and the survivor’s guilt, grief, and trauma he’s dealing with. He doesn’t seem too happy about whatever is being said in the session. Maybe it’s something about moving on? Cap is too stubborn for that so that doesn’t seem the type of thing he would take kindly to. Plus, therapy can be hard at times for anyone.

HE’S LEADING THE AVENGERS AGAIN

The ending shot of the Super Bowl television spot shows Captain America with his shield on his arm, leading a group of the Avengers (including Black Widow, Thor, and Rocket) through the hangar of the compound in upstate New York. Since Iron Man is still trapped in space, and who knows when or if he will reunite with the others, Captain America is taking up the mantle as leader of the Avengers again. While in Infinity War he was still hiding out in Wakanda and going on covert missions with Falcon and Black Widow, it seems that now things have changed. With this movie possibly being Chris Evans’ last, it’s fitting that Captain America gets a chance to be his leader self again.

BLACK WIDOW IS ONE OF THE TEAMMATES HE RELIES ON MOST

The friendship between Natasha Romanoff and Steve Rogers is one of the best in the MCU. It is a great example of how men and women can be close without having to turn their relationship into a romance. In the first Endgame trailer, we see the two of them talking together on a jet, and they are also together in most of the group shots. Steve and Natasha are likely working together to keep the Avengers going and also there to offer each other emotional support.

HE IS WILLING TO DO ANYTHING TO DEFEAT THANOS AND/OR GET THE FALLEN HEROES BACK

One thing that seems very clear in both of these trailers is that Steve Rogers is desperate and falling apart. In the first trailer, he tells Black Widow that their plan will work and then says, “because I don’t know what I’m going to do if it doesn’t.” Captain America has lost some of the closest people in his life like Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson. He also lives with the weight of saving the world on his shoulders, and with no Iron Man around to help, it’s no wonder he’s willing to do whatever he has to do to defeat Thanos. Hopefully, he doesn’t end up sacrificing himself again in the process.

HE’S FALLING APART EMOTIONALLY

We see in the first Avengers: Endgame trailer that Steve is crying, and then we see those brief therapy shots in the second trailer. All of the dialogue they have shown of Steve and all of the scenes show a man who looks truly broken down, but who is willing to keep charging ahead to do what needs to be done. Captain America is stubborn, after all. He has lost so many people close to him over the years (like Peggy Carter and Bucky Barnes–and multiple times at that), and with the responsibility of the world on his shoulders, it’s no surprise that he’s facing some internal turmoil.

WHILE HE’S GOT HIS ORIGINAL SHIELD BACK, IT MIGHT BE FOR THE LAST TIME.

One of the moments in the most recent trailer that had fans gasping was seeing the close-up shot of Cap tightening his shield (or taking it off). He dropped the shield at the end of Captain America: Civil War after his fight with Iron Man, and he had different Wakandan shields made for Avengers: Infinity War. Everyone is excited to see Steve take up his shield again, but it also looks like this could be the last time he does so. The scene in the trailer shows his hand shaking while his other hand appears to be bleeding. Things might not be looking so good.

HE’S TRYING TO RECONNECT WITH HIS CAPTAIN AMERICA IDENTITY

While in Infinity War, Steve was feeling disillusioned with his role as Captain America and had distanced himself from this role to be Nomad, now he has to pick up that mantle once again. The Avengers need a captain, so it appears that he is learning to be more like his old self, despite clearly struggling with everything that has happened. Getting his old shield back and being the one shown as the lead in many of the group shots hints at this reclaiming of his Captain America identity.

HE’S GOING TO DIE (BUT THINGS AREN’T ALWAYS AS THEY SEEM)

The biggest question fans have is if Captain America is going to die in this film. This is likely Chris Evans’ last film in the MCU, and there is precedence for Steve dying in the comics. Since he didn’t die in Civil War, fans are worried that now his time has come. The focus on Captain America in the trailers and that close-up shot of his shield makes it seem like he is likely going to die. But, Marvel is clearly aware that fans know this is likely his last appearance in the MCU, so they could be trying to scare us. Fans also thought Cap was going to die in Infinity War, but that didn’t happen. We will just have to wait and see.
