Playing Game Boy was Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson’s activity of choice to pass time on the set of Avengers: Endgame. Two of the original six Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, they play Steve Rogers/Captain America and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, respectively. Considering they’re already MCU veterans by now, the actors seem to have mastered the art of entertaining themselves while waiting during long filming days on these Marvel Studios movies.
The culmination of everything that has transpired in its universe for the last decade, Endgame was shot back-to-back with Avengers: Infinity War. The films were originally slated to be Part 1 and 2 with the same group of creative people behind them, including directors Joe and Anthony Russo and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. They eventually decided to split the movies, but stuck to its initial schedule of working on it one after the other, with some days overlapping. Because of this, the cast and crew spent a total of eight months in principal photography, with reshoots taking place in September 2018, and additional filming early this year. Given the long working days, it makes sense that the actors found their own ways to pass time while waiting for their turns in front of the camera.
Now, thanks to a photo from Mark Ruffalo shared on his official Twitter account, fans know what was keeping Evans and Johansson busy during downtime on the set of Endgame, with the snap featuring the two engaged in a Game Boy battle. Both actors seemed to enjoy whatever they’re playing on the old school console, but based on their looks, this was taken at a time where they were filming the latter part of the film, with Johansson sporting a longer red hair and Evans clean-shaven. Check out the image below:
Given the massive cast list for Infinity War, Evans’ and Johansson’s MCU characters were largely sidelined in last year’s event movie. Aside from that one battle sequence with Sam Wilson/Falcon and key moments during the big battle in Wakanda, the two didn’t do much in the film. However, based on the footage fans have seen so far for Endgame, Cap and Widow appear to be the ones rallying the team for their upcoming mission. They’re expected to assemble the remaining heroes and play a pivotal part in concocting a plan to defeat Thanos. Rogers, in particular, who left his leadership duties following his falling out with Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War, seems to be leading the pack again for their next outing.
While Evans is largely believed to be exiting the MCU after Avengers: Endgame, things are quite different for Johansson, with a Black Widow film on the way. Kevin Feige and his team have yet to officially announce the project, but things are moving along, with Cate Shortland tapped to helm the movie. That doesn’t mean though that she’s guaranteed to survive the events of the upcoming film, with her standalone movie expected to be a prequel.
