ASUS unveiled its Padfone 2 in Milan, Italy. The concept is the same — an Android smartphone with a dockable tablet, but the specs are much better. The screen of the smartphone is 720p IPS at 720 x 1280 pixels, which is a higher resolution display than the first Padfone which was 540 x 960. The screen of the tablet station is still 10.1 inches with 1280 x 800 resolution. The CPU is a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 at 1.5 Ghz. It’s helped by 2 GB of RAM and will come in 32 and 64 GB versions right away, and a 16 GB model is said to be coming soon. It runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but will soon be upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The good news for US users is that it has LTE and also HSPA+. And according to GSMArena, quoting an Asus representative, the Padfone 2 will be in the States by the end of the year. But there are no US prices were announced. In Europe, the 32GB version goes for 799 Euros ($1039 US) and 64GB Padfone 2 is 899 Euros ($1170 US). If you haven’t seen a Padfone in action before, check out this video from the ASUS. These gadgets are quite unique and interesting. But whether there’s a place for them in the ever growing mobile market remains to be seen.
