The comic book version of Crisis on Infinite Earths was loaded with major casualties, but which Arrowverse characters were victims of the event? Since there are quite a few parallels between the comics and the TV crossover, some of these deaths may be adapted to the Arrowverse, putting the lives of several key characters in jeopardy.

Based on the 1985-1986 comic book miniseries of the same name, Crisis on Infinite Earths will be told across episodes of Supergirl, Batwoman, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Arrow. The five-part event will force the main characters and supporting casts of all Arrowverse shows to pool their resources and work together to fight an enemy that threatens the entire multiverse. The stakes of the impending Crisis are so high that two Arrowverse protagonists, The Flash’s Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Arrow’s Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) are fated to die.

Against such odds, it makes sense why Crisis on Infinite Earths is the Arrowverse’s biggest and most inclusive crossover to date. This time, the annual event is involving heroes from both inside and outside the Arrowverse, including characters from Black Lightning, Smallville, and Birds of Prey. Also making appearances are actors Kevin Conroy and Burt Ward, who both have strong ties to DC Comics shows. Needless to say, Crisis on Infinite Earths is packed with characters, which opens up questions about how many will make it out alive. The comics may provide clues.

Lex Luthor

During Crisis on Infinite Earths, Brainiac traveled across multiple realities, gathering various different versions of DC Comics villains for his army. One of his recruits was Earth-2’s Lex Luthor, “Alexei Luthor”. Much to Alexei’s disappointment, Brainiac appointed Earth-1’s Lex Luthor to be the general of the army. When Alexei took issue with this, believing himself to be superior to his Earth-1 counterpart, Brainiac killed him.

Jon Cryer’s Supergirl character, Lex Luthor, is back for the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths, but the actor may be playing one of Lex Luthor’s alternate timeline doppelgangers since Earth-38’s Lex Luthor died in season 4 of Supergirl. Cryer has been spotted in set photos and official images standing with the heroes, so he may be serving as an ally of sorts in the crossover.

Huntress

The two most prominent versions of Huntress in DC Comics are Helena Wayne and Helena Bertinelli. Earth-2’s Helena Wayne, the daughter of Batman and Catwoman, was one of the many heroes who took part in the battle to save the multiverse. Huntress survived the destruction of her own Earth, but was killed in an attempt to rescue children from shadow demons, who were evil creations of the Anti-Monitor.

The Arrowverse’s Huntress, Helena Bertinelli (Jessica De Gouw) isn’t confirmed to appear in the crossover, but there will be a role for Helena Wayne. Played by Ashley Scott and renamed “Helena Kyle”, the character was one of the leads in the 2001 WB series, Birds of Prey.

Green Arrow

Earth-2’s Green Arrow was a Golden Age hero who debuted in 1941. This version of Oliver Queen is quite different in both personality and backstory from the Oliver Queen that fans know today from the comics, the cartoons, and Arrow. DC Comics moved on from Earth-2’s Green Arrow by killing him off in Crisis on Infinite Earths. By the time of the event, Oliver was a middle-aged man who was too out of practice to hold off the Anti-Monitor’s shadow demons.

It’s unlikely that his death will have any influence on Oliver’s fate in the show, even if the Arrowverse isn’t bluffing about killing Green Arrow. Oliver accepted at the beginning of the season that his death will have to happen if the multiverse is to be saved, but how this will play out remains a mystery.

Barry Allen

The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) has repeatedly insisted that if the world is to survive the Crisis, Barry Allen must die. The importance of Barry’s sacrifice is rooted in the comics. For Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC Comics made the decision to bring Barry Allen’s 30-year journey as the Flash to an end. To save the multiverse, Barry had to reach new levels of speed to counteract the antimatter that was fired from the Anti-Monitor’s anti-matter cannon. As a result, Barry was swallowed up by the Speed Force. Barry didn’t end the Crisis, but his sacrifice set the stage for the victory that came later. Though not permanent, Barry’s death was a long-lasting one for DC Comics. With Barry gone, Wally West became DC’s main version of the Flash.

The Monitor

The Monitor is a key player in both versions of Crisis on Infinite Earths. The wise, all-knowing cosmic being is the one who knows what’s going to happen and how to stop it. In the comic books, the Monitor sent the Harbinger to recruit the heroes needed to avert the Crisis, but one of the Anti-Monitor’s shadow demons attacked and corrupted her, causing Harbinger to betray Monitor. Harbinger killed Monitor, but not before he saved Earth-1 and Earth-2 from destruction. Monitor’s last-minute move made sure the heroes survived. With both the Monitor and the Harbinger (Audrey Marie Anderson) involved in the crossover, the crossover may send the Monitor in a similar direction, but it’s also possible that the Monitor will live through the Crisis, since he was present in a flash-forward scene in season 7 of Arrow.

Supergirl

One of the most iconic comic book covers of all time is featured on Crisis on Infinite Earths #7, which depicts a distraught Superman holding the body of his cousin, Supergirl. In the comic, Supergirl died after launching a brave assault on the Anti-Monitor in a desperate attempt to save Superman. Anti-Monitor retaliated by killing her. The decision to kill off Supergirl was motivated by the idea that Supergirl was created mostly for sales, and that the character didn’t contribute enough to Superman lore for her to remain relevant to their plans. So DC Comics opted to return to the days of Superman being the Last Son of Krypton and the planet’s sole survivor.

Compared to the state of DC Comics at the time, Supergirl is obviously more important to the Arrowverse, considering that she leads her own show. With this in mind, Crisis on Infinite Earths may find a different way to honor one of the event’s most iconic moments by instead killing one of its three Supermen - but not Tyler Hoechlin’s, since his character is getting his own TV series.

Anti-Monitor

The Anti-Monitor is the main villain in the comic book storyline, which is a role his TV counterpart will share. In fact, he may have already made his Arrowverse debut. Unlike the Monitor, the Anti-Monitor has no interest in preserving the various realities that make up the multiverse. Instead, the Anti-Monitor wants to use anti-matter to erase everything in existence. The heroes of DC Comics try to stop him at every turn, and it takes nearly all of them to stop him. Even one of the DC Universe’s most powerful villains, Darkseid, has to get in on the action. At the end of the conflict, the Anti-Monitor is finally killed by Earth-2’s Superman, Kal-L.
