Arrow may be ending soon, but those involved still need to say goodbye. The CW series burst onto the scene in 2012 and kicked off the popular Arrowverse. Its lead, Oliver Queen, is a mentor for other superheroes of the Arrowverse, especially The Flash’s Barry Allen and Supergirl’s Kara Danvers. However, despite the show’s impact, Arrow will air its series finale early next year after 8 seasons. There’s also a chance some characters from the show will live on, with a Green Arrow and the Canaries spinoff set to air a backdoor pilot as one of Arrow’s final episodes.
The final season of Arrow has already featured many returning characters from the show’s past, with others still to come. Both Oliver’s mother, Moira (Susanna Thompson), and friend Tommy Merlyn (Colin Donnell) came back for Arrow’s premiere episode, which was set on Earth-2. Unfortunately, the premiere ended with the destruction of Earth-2, meaning that those versions of Moira and Tommy likely won’t return. Other characters such as Oliver’s sister, Thea, and former Team Arrow member Curtis have popped up during Arrow’s final season as well. However, the most exciting return won’t happen until the series finale, when Emily Bett Rickards reprises her role as Felicity Smoak.
Arrow’s former co-showrunner Marc Guggenheim took to Twitter to share a heartfelt farewell to the show on behalf of himself and current showrunner Beth Schwartz. Both have worked on the show in some capacity since season 1. They addressed their letter to “the best Cast and Crew in the business.” Series lead Stephen Amell has also paid tribute to Arrow’s conclusion several times throughout filming the show’s final season. Now that Arrow is nearly done filming its final season, fans are undoubtedly eager to see how Oliver’s story ends. However, before that, he’ll go through another trial during the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event set to air this December and January. Crisis on Infinite Earths will show characters from every Arrowverse show, as well as Black Lightning, as they come together to help the god-like Monitor save the multiverse. The CW is pulling out all the stops for the five-part crossover, even including three different Supermans that will all appear together.
As fans prepare to say goodbye to a groundbreaking series like Arrow, it’s nice to know that those behind the scenes also recognize the show’s importance. As Schwartz and Guggenheim mention in their letter, the show set off “a multiverse of TV shows,” and that shouldn’t be forgotten. If Arrow had flopped, it’s likely that none of the other Arrowverse series would have come to fruition. Luckily, with several episodes, Crisis on Infinite Earths, and the show’s finale still to come, fans have plenty of opportunities left to celebrate and say goodbye to Arrow.
