The Arrow season 8 trailer is released by The CW teasing the series’ final season. Arrow premiered in 2012 as the first show to launch the popular Arrowverse. Now, the universe includes The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and new series Batwoman, which premieres Oct. 6. All five shows, plus characters from fellow DC series Black Lightning, will unite at the end of the year for the massive Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. Some assume that the Green Arrow, Oliver Queen, will meet his end in the crossover, partly because that’s what happens in the Crisis on Infinite Earths comic. Additionally, a tombstone with his name and the year 2019 was shown in the Arrow season 7 finale.

Beyond the crossover, fans already know a lot about the final season of Arrow, especially some of the characters who are returning. Last week, it was announced that Willa Holland, who plays Oliver’s sister Thea, will recur. She was a series regular for the first six seasons of Arrow and returned for one episode earlier this year. Oliver’s first mentor, Yao Fei (Byron Mann), will also return at some point, despite being killed in the season 1 finale. Additionally, fan favorite John Barrowman, who plays Malcolm Merlyn, will return, as well as Josh Segarra’s Adrian Chase. Segarra’s return was first teased during Arrow’s trailer from San Diego Comic-Con over the summer.

The CW released the newest trailer this afternoon, and it offers a more detailed look at the show’s farewell season. In it, Oliver can be heard saying, “The only way that this is bearable for me is if I am certain my sacrifice, my death, will protect the people I love.” Several characters from early in the series are shown, including Tommy and Talia al Ghul, who is standing next to Oliver in front of a cave of some kind. Black Siren makes an appearance, as does Thea, mid-fight with an unknown assailant. The words, “The final season…starts at the beginning” appear on the screen. Then, Oliver’s deceased mother, Moira, is heard asking “Oliver?”, to which he responds “Hi, Mom.” Check out the trailer for Arrow season 8 below:

Earlier today, it was revealed that The CW and those behind Arrow are already looking to extend the show past its final season - in a manner of speaking. For quite a while now it’s been rumored that the network was considering a spinoff set in 2040, likely starring Oliver and Felicity’s kids, Mia and William. Fans of the series got to know those characters in Arrow season 7, which frequently flashed-forward to Mia and William as adults. However, the potential Arrowverse spinoff will actually focus on Mia and the Canaries: Dinah Drake and Earth-2’s Laurel Lance. A backdoor pilot for the show will air at some point as part of Arrow’s final season.

The Arrow season 8 trailer certainly makes good on the idea of going back to the beginning of Arrow. The Monitor’s inclusion in the final season, as well as the crossover, will make it so the show can literally revisit past places and characters from Arrow’s history. The time travel and Earth-hopping that the Monitor is capable of will let the series say goodbye to many of the show’s most iconic characters in a way more realistic shows aren’t able to. With so many deceased characters seen in the trailer, it looks like Arrow is going to take advantage of this and offer fans a truly special final season.
