It’s the end of an era as Arrow star Stephen Amell completes filming on the CW series. Now in its eighth and final season, Arrow made a name for itself by kick-starting the Arrowverse, which now includes four shows in addition to the one that started it all. Amell plays Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, a vigilante who assembles a team to fight those who have failed his city. Throughout the course of the series, Oliver wrestles with his parents’ legacy and struggles to keep his loved ones safe. He also finds friendship with John Diggle/Spartan and Barry Allen of The Flash, both of whom help him manage his inner demons.
Though Arrow employed flashbacks for much of the show’s run, it broke tradition starting with season 7 and flash-forwarded to Star City in the year 2040. There, viewers got to know older versions of current Arrow characters and meet new ones like Oliver and Felicity’s daughter, Mia Smoak. Mia, along with fellow canaries Laurel Lance and Dinah Drake, will star in a potential spinoff series titled Green Arrow and the Canaries, though it’s uncertain what year it will take place. Mia was recently transported to present-day Star City, where she interacted with both Laurel and Dinah.
Amell has taken to social media several times throughout Arrow’s final season to post emotional tributes and share behind-the-scenes photos with fans. Early this morning, Amell celebrated his final night of filming on the series, saying in part, “Words can’t even begin to express what Arrow has meant to me.” He also called his time on the show the “best 8 years of my life,” echoing the sentiment that Arrow’s showrunners expressed in a letter yesterday. Before the end of Arrow’s series finale in January 2020, fans will get to say goodbye to a few more familiar faces. Paul Blackthorne, who played police chief Quentin Lance for the show’s first 6 seasons, will appear in multiple episodes, including the finale. Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak), will also pop up in the finale after exiting in Arrow’s season 7 finale. Amell confirmed Rickards’ return earlier this month. It’s possible that other fan favorites will turn up during the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, which will begin airing next month before concluding in January. Crisis on Infinite Earths will probably feature time travel and show the characters exploring the multiverse, opening up the possibility for deceased characters like Lance to join the fight.
Amell’s message from today shows how important Arrow has been to him personally, especially considering his close bond with the cast and crew. Other tributes from the show’s creatives have also proven how important Arrow is overall. The series has proven to be a lifesaver to both the television superhero genre and The CW. As Arrow completes production, it’s nice to see both its star and those working behind-the-scenes honor the show and how much it has meant to fans.
