As Arrow finally wrapped filming on its eighth and final season, show co-creator Marc Guggenheim took to social media to reveal the final two words of dialogue in the series: “To you.” As the longest-running series in The CW Arrowverse, Arrow will air its final episode on January 28, 2020. Leading up to the series finale, Oliver Queen and company will participate in the Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover event, which will also include other popular Arrowverse shows like Supergirl and The Flash.
The Arrow has had a major influence on the television landscape. The DCEU has gotten very mixed reviews from both fans and critics, but The CW’s lineup of DC TV shows has maintained a loyal following ever since Arrow premiered in 2012. As the cast and crew say goodbye to the series, they are sharing emotional goodbyes on social media. Guggenheim recently tweeted the original pilot pitch notes for Arrow, which referred to the show as “The Hunter.” In addition, the showrunners posted a heartfelt farewell letter as the final day of filming came to a close. Fans have been following along on Twitter and Instagram, where Amell and his co-stars have been sharing updates from the last days of production.
In a Twitter post for fans, Marc Guggenheim teased the final two words of dialogue that will be heard on Arrow: “To you.” The tweet doesn’t provide any clues or context beyond those words, so fans can only speculate about who will be speaking those words on the finale. However, it’s hard not to read those simple words as a dedication to the many fans who believed in Arrow over the years. Many of those fans believe that Oliver Queen will die in the final episode, but no matter what happens in the show’s plot, Amell’s crimefighting vigilante would be the obvious choice to get the show’s last words.
This wouldn’t be the first time a creator has teased the final words of their work. Years before the ending of the Harry Potter book series, author J.K. Rowling consistently told fans that the final word in the final book would be “scar.” For years, fans wondered how exactly that word would feature into the closing sentence of the incredibly popular fantasy novels. Of course, Rowling eventually changed her mind; scar was not, in fact, the final word in the books (the final word ended up being “well”). However, with filming officially wrapped on Arrow for good, Guggenheim is almost certainly telling the truth about Arrow’s final words.
In two months, fans can tune into The CW to say goodbye to Arrow for themselves. A spinoff series based on the show is in the works, so some characters from the show could stay on TV in a new setting. And, of course, Arrow has given birth to an entire slate of DC superhero programming on The CW, which will live on for years to come.
