The final season of Arrow might finally address the teases with regard to Green Lantern. For several seasons now, the inaugural DC TV show has been dropping hints about John Diggle (David Ramsey) potentially joining the Emerald Knights. That’s despite the fact that like his best friend, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), he also operates as a vigilante in Starling City as Spartan.
It was announced back in March that Arrow’s eight year will be its final one as well. It’ll consist of a smaller number of episodes with just 10, but it will still partake in the annual Arrowverse crossover event titled Crisis on Infinite Earths. All shows in the DCTV franchise are participating such as staples like The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow (after skipping last year’s affair), as well as the upcoming Batwoman TV series and Black Lightning for its first ever foray into the small screen special event. But aside from that, fans are particularly curious about how Arrow will wrap up its overall narrative, including lingering loose plot points such as the possibility of Diggle becoming Green Lantern.
Speaking with Collider with regard to the nearing end of Arrow, Ramsey teases fans that there will be a pay off with the several hints that he may eventually become a Green Lantern before the show wrapped up. And while it is complicated to finally use the character in the series, the actor is implying that his appearance may finally happen.
For context, fans are convinced that Diggle is Arrow’s version of Green Lantern John Stewart. And since the small screen character wasn’t really mined from print, this can be done without turning off readers of comic books. There have been several clues that Diggle wearing the iconic ring is in the cards for him, but it’s something that the show has yet to really dive into. Apparently, they might be saving that for the last remaining episodes of Arrow because while the showrunners have been aware of this ongoing theory, it wasn’t until last season that they really actively incorporated it to their narrative with the implication that Diggle was a Green Lantern on Earth 90.
“Ultimately, I think we have to find out what’s going on with Green Lantern. We’ve been teasing that since Season 2 or 3. It’s been a crazy amount of time, so we have to put a button on that, and from what I’m hearing, we will.
“By the time any show is up on television, there have been literally thousands of hoops that have been jumped through. It doesn’t happen arbitrarily. There’s been a tremendous amount of logistics and moving parts that have come together, to make this one show happen. How Greg has duplicated that, over and over and over and over, and 18 times over again, has just been incredible. But he and Marc and Beth [Schwartz] have been very forthright about what they want to do with that whole possible mythos, with Green Lantern. So, if it had not been for them, yes, I’d probably be pulling my hair out, what little I have, and saying, ‘What’s going on, guys?,’ but they’ve been very honest about it.”
Assuming that a version of this eventually comes to fruition in the final episodes of Arrow, it will more likely leave fans wanting for more. The show is already gearing up with a spinoff titled Green Arrow and the Canaries and will revolve around Oliver’s daughter Mia Smoak (McNamara) as she becomes the new Green Arrow. Perhaps if Diggle assuming the persona of a Green Lantern is somehow confirmed, it can lead to his own offshoot series.
