Oliver Queen’s ending in Arrow is what actor Stephen Amell pitched. After seven years, Arrow is coming to a close with season 8. It will be a big part of Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Oliver Queen has undergone a lot of development over the course of Arrow. As season 1 revealed, Oliver was a spoiled playboy who was put in an unthinkable situation for someone like him: being stranded on an island for five years. On this island, Oliver learned how to fight, survive, and utilize a bow and arrow. He eventually returned to Star City and became a vigilante dubbed “The Hood.” Oliver’s development would continue from there, turning from killer vigilante, to inspiring hero. He became the leader of a team, and even the mayor of Star City. Oliver’s development reaches a climax in Arrow’s final season. If the Monitor is to be believed, Oliver is destined to die trying to save the multiverse from destruction. Oliver’s death is not confirmed, but how his story concludes is how Amell wants it.
Amell has stated (via TV Guide) that Oliver Queen’s character climax is what he has been pitching for a long time. In addition, David Ramsey, who portrays John Diggle/Spartan, believes Diggle’s ending is true to the character’s storyline.
The actors do not provide any hints to what these endings will be, but based on their statements, fans should be content. Amell has been portraying Oliver Queen for a long time now, so he knows the character better than anyone, likewise with Ramsey’s Diggle. In the clip, Amell states that no one sees what’s coming in the crossover, so fans should expect big surprises from Crisis on Infinite Earths.
It’s not known how exactly Arrow’s final season will conclude, but interestingly, executive producer Marc Guggenheim came up with a new idea for the final scene. It’s up in the air if this scene will be able to be filmed, so time will tell. Amell actually wanted Arrow to end with season 7, but changed his mind when the pitch for season 8 was given to him. Regarding season 8, it was recently stated that John Barrowman will be reprising his role as Malcolm Merlyn/Dark Archer, a character who seemingly died back in season 5. Combine that with the return of Adrian Chase and Katana, fans have a lot to look forward to in Arrow’s final outing.
