[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Arrow ahead.]

The CW seems to have a monopoly when it comes to live-action DC Comics television adaptations. Dubbed the Arrowverse, the network kick started the proceedings back in 2012 with the introduction of Arrow; a series following the adventures of protagonist Oliver Queen and his journey to becoming the superhero, Green Arrow. Now in its fifth season, Arrow has proved immensely popular and helped bring to the small screen separate series The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, with a Black Lightning show also currently in the works.
Over the past 15 episodes of Arrow, viewers have seen flashbacks to Oliver’s time in Russia along with the introduction of two new villains; Prometheus and Vigilante. Though the show is on a break this week, the synopsis for the upcoming 5x17 episode ‘Kapiushon’ has been revealed, hinting at Oliver Queen’s reaching a ‘breaking point’.
You can read the full synopsis for ‘Kapiushon’, below:
“THE BREAKING POINT — Prometheus (Josh Segarra) goes to great lengths to break Oliver (Stephen Amell). Meanwhile, in the flashbacks, Anatoly (guest star David Nykl) becomes worried about Oliver’s increasingly violent tendencies, which come to a head in a brutal confrontation. Kevin Tancharoen directed the episode written by Brian Ford Sullivan & Emilio Ortega Aldrich (#517). Original airdate 3/22/2017.”
While Prometheus’ identity has now been revealed to viewers at home, Oliver still remains in the dark as to who’s behind the mask. Josh Segarra’s character Adrian Chase had up until the unmasking, seemed to be one of Oliver’s closest friends, so to see the pair go up against one another in future episodes is going to be very interesting for fans. It also looks like we’re going to be delving even deeper into Oliver’s time with Anatoly in Russia, peeling back the layers of the vigilante’s former violent outbursts and finding out exactly what went into Oliver’s transformation from civilian to ‘The Hood’.
Oliver was found at Lian Yu back in the series’ pilot episode, so it’s looking likely that he’s going to have a big disagreement with Anatoly that gets him sent back there, bringing the flashbacks full circle. Oliver’s aggressive nature was a recurring theme throughout the show’s first two seasons, and as we now know, Prometheus was born out of those initial violent actions. (Those screenwriters are a very clever bunch!)
It seems that this season more than ever before, those working on Arrow have put in huge efforts to ensure there’s a big payoff for fans who have remained loyal to the series. In the past, the show has been scrutinized for straying a little too far from its original tone and source material, but the general feel around season 5 is one of positivity. Long may that continue.
Arrow continues on The CW on Wednesday, March 15 at 8pm with ‘Checkmate’.
