Arrow joins forces with John Constantine in a new image, teasing a crossover. This year will see Arrow take its final bow in a shortened season 8, as well as the Arrowverse’s most ambitious crossover event to date, Crisis on Infinite Earths.
John Constantine made his first comic appearance in Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 in 1985. He was created by Alan Moore, Rick Veitch, John Totleben and Steve Bissette, though he was greatly expanded upon by Jamie Delano when the character went solo in the Hellblazer series. Constantine is quite the Renaissance Man: warlock, occult detective and con artist. He may be known for his cynicism and chain-smoking, but he is also an undeniable hero. Matt Ryan portrayed the titular mage in 2014’s ill-fated Constantine TV show. NBC axed the series after a mere thirteen episodes, but it’s not that easy to defeat John Constantine. The character found new life on The CW, beginning with Arrow season 4 and has since gone on to become a series regular on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. It would appear that he and Oliver Queen will soon be reunited.
David Ramsey, who plays John Diggle on Arrow, posted this photo of himself and his costars on Instagram. Aside from Ramsey, the image also features Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen, Katherine McNamara as Mia Smoak and Ryan’s Constantine. The four actors appear to be deep in the woods of Lian Yu, though it’s impossible to be certain. It’s also unclear exactly what this photo means in terms of Ryan’s appearance. Ramsey mentions Arrow’s upcoming season premiere in his post, but the image could also have come from filming the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover or some other point during Arrow season 8.
Crisis on Infinite Earths will unite the heroes of Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and Batwoman, with Black Lightning even set to join the Arrowverse. Much like the 1985 comic that it’s loosely based on forever altered the DC Universe, the event seems poised to shake up the Arrowverwse. Because this is Arrow’s final season, there is speculation that Ollie will meet his end and it has already been confirmed that Barry Allen will die. Aside from that, each day seems to bring another impressive casting announcement for the crossover. One of the more surprising developments was the news that Tom Welling will reprise his role as Clark Kent and Erica Durance will be returning as Lois Lane. Sadly, Michael Rosenbaum’s Lex Luthor will not be making an appearance.
John Constantine quickly became a fan favorite in the Arrowverse, which explains his upgrade from guest star to series regular. Ryan has perfectly embodied the character from the start and it will be exciting to see him once again interacting with the heroes of Arrow. We’ll just have to wait and see what form this crossover will take.
