Netflix dropped the official trailer for the second half of Arrested Development’s fifth season. After years of rumors about the show being adapted into a movie after it was canceled in 2003, it was finally resurrected for a fourth season by Netflix in 2013. The fifth season was then split, with 8 episodes released last May, and another 8 set to drop in mid-March.
The first official images and plot details revealed by Netflix earlier this month set up some important clues about what fans of the Bluth family can expect to see in their next round of cringeworthy mishaps. Buster (Tony Hale) appears to be back on the hook for the presumed death of Lucille 2 (Liza Minnelli), leaving Michael (Jason Bateman) to uncover the truth behind her disappearance. Meanwhile, George Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor) and Lucille (Jessica Walter) seem to be setting their sights on their grandson George Michael’s (Michael Cera) fake company Fake Block to fund the US-Mexico border wall they were contracted to build.
So far, Arrested Development looks to be promising an intense half-season, full of the show’s dry comedy. However, it’s given nothing away about the answer to the murder mystery, the status of the wall, or whether or not the Bluth family legacy will fully and finally come crashing down. Check out the Netflix trailer and the latest official image below:
As the trailer reveals, the show is bringing back some of its best loved gags, such as Gob’s (Will Arnett) abysmally executed magic tricks, Gene Parmesan’s sporadic appearances, and Tobias’ (David Cross) endless supply of double entendres. While Portia de Rossi (who plays Lindsay) was featured in the latest official poster, her absence from the trailer suggests that her screen time may be limited. De Rossi had previously retired from acting, but agreed to take part in Arrested Development season 5.
The genius of the series has always been its ability to satirize political headlines through a ruthless, yet somehow adorably clueless family that manages to invite scandal and corruption at every possible turn. The omnipresent, but uniquely humanizing joke is that no one in the Bluth family - from its most altruistic members to its downright devious ones - are morally bankrupt or particularly admirable. If season 5 does indeed mark the end, whether or not the family members truly start to change their seemingly unbreakable patterns may end up being creator Mitchell Hurwitz’s ultimate message: that there is a choice between accountability and honesty over the greed and exploitation that leads to another metaphorical border wall.
