Despite a tweet from Ed Boon that seemed to imply that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be lending his voice to the Terminator in Mortal Kombat 11, it turns out that the game will only be using his likeness. The tweet from Mortal Kombat’s co-creator came shortly after an official video announced the full roster of characters that were being added to the game in the Kombat Pack, all of which had already been leaked earlier in the summer.
This will be the first time that the Terminator has appeared as a guest character in a Mortal Kombat game, though the Predator from the Schwarzenegger-starring movie of the same name has appeared in the franchise before. There have also been a number of games based directly on the Terminator franchise, on platforms ranging from the NES up to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Schwarzenegger even provided voice acting for his character in some of those games, including 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, versions of which appeared on consoles and as a pinball machine.
When Ed Boon tweeted on August 22, “Part of me still can’t believe we got Arnold,” many took it to mean that Schwarzenegger would once again be voicing his iconic character in Mortal Kombat 11. Several sources, including the game’s publisher, Warner Bros. Interactive, confirmed to THR that that was not the case. Instead, the Terminator’s in-game model with be based directly on Schwarzenegger’s likeness, but his lines will be performed by a sound-alike.
Despite the lack of a completely authentic voice for the Terminator, the Kombat Pack still has a lot to look forward to. In addition to the T-800, who will be available on October 8, the DLC will add Mortal Kombat 3 character Sindel on November 26, the Joker on January 28, and Spawn on March 17. That’s in addition to returning Mortal Kombat combatants Shang Tsung and Nightwolf, who have already been unlocked. Characters can be purchased individually for those who aren’t excited by the full list, as players who buy the pass get access to them one week early.
While it may be somewhat disappointing that Arnie won’t appear in Mortal Kombat 11 in both likeness and voice, it shouldn’t be too surprising. The reason that Boon’s tweet caused such a stir is that Schwarzenegger rarely lends his voice to any game. When he voiced the Terminator in the Rise of the Machines games, he even noted that he typically turns down such projects, and only signed on because the games did justice to the films they were based on. It might be fun to pit the T-800 against a roster of supernatural martial artists in Mortal Kombat, but it’s definitely not aiming to be faithful to the movies.
