Actor Armie Hammer criticizes Marvel Entertainment Chairman Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter for his continued support of Donald Trump. The recent news of Equinox and SoulCycle owner billionaire Stephen Ross’ upcoming Hamptons fundraiser for the the President’s re-election bid has caused their patrons to boycott the companies. And in light of this news, Hammer reminded everyone that Perlmutter is also a staunch supporter of Trump. He famously donated $1 million to Trump’s wonder veterans initiative prior to being elected. His wife, Laura, was also a member of Trump’s inauguration committee.
Perlmutter immigrated from Israel to the United States and worked his way up on the corporate ladder. He previously held jobs at Revco, Coleco and Remmington before joining Avi Arad, Ron Perelman and Carl Icahn in taking over the troubled Marvel Comics. Perlmutter helped stabilize the brand’s print line. In 2001, he became the chairman of Marvel and then the chief executive officer of Marvel Comics in 2005. He maintained his position at the company despite The Walt Disney Company’s acquisition in 2009, but refused a seat of the House of Mouse’s board of directors. Perlmutter is notoriously private, having never given any interview despite holding a prominent position at one of the biggest entertainment organization. But he’s known to have ties with Trump, something that Hammer doesn’t want the public to overlook.
Taking it to his official Twitter account, Hammer addressed the ongoing boycot of Equinox and SoulCycle after their owner’s ties with Trump were exposed. He then shifted the focus on Perlmutter’s relationship with the president, writing: “It might be a good time to mention that one of Trump’s largest financial contributors is the chairman of Marvel Entertainment (Isaac Perlmutter).” Read his full social media post below:
The said tweet gained varying opinions, some of them not really zeroing in on Marvel’s Perlmutter but the idea that people should be able to have their own political views and donate to whatever organization they believe in. Given that argument, others argued back that the public can also choose to support businesses they want to. In any case, it’s important to note that Perlmutter is no longer tied to Marvel Studios. Co-presidents Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito oversee the entirety of the Marvel Cinematic Universe - be it their big or small screen projects. They previously answered to Perlmutter, but after a reported conflict in 2015 that almost had Feige leave his post, they now coordinate directly with Disney’s chairman, Alan Horn. Marvel TV Jeph Loeb, however, remains under Perlmutter.
Hammer has not been involved in a Marvel project, but he’s not new to the comic book movie world. He was tipped to play Batman in George Miller’s scrapped Justice League Mortal film, and prior to the confirmation that Robert Pattinson will don the cowl and cape in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, he was a fan-favorite for the part. With Marvel Entertainment and Marvel Studios separated, who’s to say that Hammer won’t find himself in an MCU offering moving forward, but at this point, it doesn’t seem like there’s any plans for him to join the universe.
