The Facebook event organizing a raid on Area 51 was removed, accidentally. Area 51, located in Nevada, is a highly classified United States Air Force facility that’s become the face of conspiracy theories, alien kidnappings, and UFO folklore. Saturated with allusiveness and bizarre occurrences, Area 51 has been a focal point for numerous sci-fi films and series, including The X-files, Independence Day, and Stargate SG-1. Now, a plan is underway to storm Area 51 and unveil the government’s alleged secrets.

In June, Matty Roberts took to the social media giant to create a petition titled “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop Us All”. Organized to invade Area 51 on September 20, and free supposedly captured aliens, the event description states, “If we Naruto run, we can move faster than bullets. Let’s see them aliens.” Nodding to anime, a Naruto run is a style of running in which a person sprints forward with their arms stretched out behind them. The Facebook event has become an online sensation, spawning a plethora of memes. To date, the petition has been signed by over 2 million curious civilians. Naturally, the US Air Force has warned against the titular plan, and expressed necessary measures would be taken to protect America and its assets. Recently, the raiders received a scare when the event page disappeared.

As reported to Comic Book, Roberts was informed that the page violated Facebook’s community standards, and was removed. After an uproar, the situation was swiftly remedied, and the event was reinstated. The event page wasn’t, in fact, in violation of Facebook’s rules and regulations. A Facebook spokesperson declared that the page’s removal was a mere mistake.

Area 51 invaders continue to move forward with their scheme. The small town of Rachel, Nevada is the closest habitation to Area 51, and its singular inn is booked solid for September 20. According to the event page, all members will congregate at the Area 51 Alien Center Tourist Attraction, and formulate a plan for their next steps - or Naruto run.

Petitions were created to be a tool to promote justice and raise awareness. However, over the course of the last few years, petitions have breached the boundaries of social issues and propelled into radical ideas. Petitioning the White House to build a Death Star, Game of Thrones creators to remake season 8, and MCU to bring Tony Stark back to life are prominent examples of shallow reasoning backed with a deluge of signatures. As for Area 51, those who are signed up to attend must be aware that announcing the invasion date several months before has given ample time for those protecting the area to prepare. No doubt the nation awaits with bated breath to see what events will unfold at Area 51 in September.
