As the DCEU prepares to dive into Aquaman, it looks like the stars are taking a break from pre-production to soak up some of the Australian sunshine. Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson’s onscreen characters may be at odds when Aquaman comes to theaters in 2018, but for now, they look like they are best of friends.
Momoa and Wilson are playing arch-enemies in James Wan’s underwater DCEU adventure, with Wilson set to portray Orm the Ocean Master, one of Aquaman’s (Momoa) most formidable enemies. First appearing as Arthur Curry’s half-brother in Aquaman #19 in 1966, Orm has had several revised origins over the decades but has always been against Aquaman, in the world of DC Comics.
Taking to social media, Momoa told his Instagram followers exactly what he thought of co-star Wilson:
Arthur and King orm. My real half brother is on Twitter only @patrickwilson73 So so so so so Fucking happy to work with this talent. It’s honor to play Aquaman Aloha j A post shared by Jason Momoa (@prideofgypsies) on Apr 13, 2017 at 9:24pm PDT

37-year-old Momoa certainly seems to be the right fit for the role of Curry, while his appearance in the Justice League trailer showed that he has the perfect comic timing to go up against Ben Affleck’s stoic Batman. Rising to fame after his appearance as Khal Drogo on HBO’s Game of Thrones, Momoa means business as Aquaman. Zack Snyder teased us with a brief Curry cameo in Batman V Superman and said that he hopes to reinvent the Aquaman character away from his underrated status in the Justice League.
As for Wilson, Aquaman won’t be the first time he has crossed paths with Warner Bros. and the world of superheroes. He famously portrayed Daniel Dreiberg, aka Nite Owl II, in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen in 2009, albeit in a hero capacity. Although Snyder won’t be telling Orm’s story for Aquaman, his influence on the DCEU will undoubtedly be felt in Wan’s film. On playing Ocean Master, Wilson teased that his character wouldn’t just be another faceless drone, hoping to avoid the now-infamous “superhero movie villain problem.”
We already know that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be playing the villainous Black Manta in Aquaman and that Dolph Lundgren will NOT be playing a villainous version of King Nereus, but a new iteration of the character. Elsewhere, Willem Dafoe will star as Nuidis Vulko, while Nicole Kidman and Amber Heard make up the female contingent of the cast.
While we undoubtedly see a lot more of Momoa in action during Justice League, fans are holding their breath that Aquaman can live up to the hype surrounding it. Only time will tell if it is sink or swim for Wan, Wilson, and Momoa.
