He’s the man who convinced everyone Aquaman is actually pretty cool, but here are some of Jason Momoa’s other roles. Fans of the Aquaman comic know the character has been through some gritty reinventions, but for years he was considered something of a pop culture joke. Family Guy and Entourage took repeated jabs at the character and even when Jason Momoa was cast as Aquaman for Justice League, there was skepticism even he could make the aquatic hero a badass.
While the response to the final version of Justice League was mixed, the solo Aquaman movie proved to be a huge success. Momoa was endlessly charismatic in the part and director James Wan injected the movie with an enjoyably pulpy, over the top tone. Aquaman’s success practically guaranteed a sequel, which is set to surface in 2022.
While Jason Momoa doesn’t necessarily have the longest list of movies and TV credits, he appeared in some iconic projects long before taking up Arthur Curry’s mantle. His very first acting job was Baywatch: Hawaii in 1999, playing the part of lifeguard Jason Ioane. Momoa would return for 2003 TV movie Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding, which served as a finale for the series. Momoa states it took him a little time to shake off his appearance on the show and find other parts.
He appeared on short-lived soap opera North Shore before landing the part of Ronon Dex on Stargate: Atlantis. Momoa was perfect casting for the role and became a real fan favorite. Atlantis ended in 2009 and Momoa would go on to play Khal Drogo in the first season of Game Of Thrones, which is the part that made him a star. Drogo may not have survived very long, but Momoa made a real impression. The role brought Jason Momoa Hollywood attention and he got to fulfill a childhood dream by working with Sylvester Stallone in thriller Bullet To The Head, where the pair duke it out with axes in the finale. He also played the title role in the 2011 Conan The Barbarian remake, but sadly, both films proved to be box-office disappointments.
In 2014 he played a villain role in David Hayter’s Wolves, and the actor would later stretch his creative muscles with biker movie Road To Paloma, which he also co-wrote and directed. He played a lead role in Sundance TV drama The Red Road, which lasted two seasons, and in 2016 he took on the part of Declan Harp in TV series Frontier. That same year he also made a brief cameo in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and played Miami Man in dark comedy The Bad Batch.
Jason Momoa reprised the role of Aquaman for The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and will play Duncan Idaho in director Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming adaptation of Dune.
