The kingdom of Atlantis will be in good hands for years to come, now that Aquaman and Mera’s baby girl is finally joining the DC Universe. But the battle for the throne coming to the first family won’t just test Arthur’s abilities – but take Mera’s to entirely new limits.

Aquaman and Mera have been traversing some troubled waters recently, and the waves are only going to get bigger. After fighting to claim the throne of Atlantis, seeing Earth swallowed by extradimensional waters, and briefly reuniting amidst an epic confrontation between cosmic forces and a battle with a Lovecraftian sea monster, Mera and Arthur will welcome a bouncing bundle of joy. That story has yet to be told, but it’s now been confirmed that the Queen’s return will also include a serious power boost.

While the New 52 reboot of Aquaman took on the myriad of clichés and jokes regarding Arthur’s place in the pantheon of DC’s heroes, Mera’s even more powerful abilities have been underutilized until recently. The DC Rebirth Era has shown Mera accomplishing unparalleled feats, but while Mera’s abilities make her a force to be reckoned with, her true strength lay in her passion. The same heart that loves Arthur contains a flame that will scorch the earth if left unchecked. And even if the level to which Mera’s abilities will be elevated is currently unknown, fans know where and when it will arrive. The forthcoming Aquaman #60 serves not only as the source of her power boost, but also a threat that will come directly for her family. This time in the form of Arthur’s own brother, Orm, otherwise known as The Ocean Master.

  • AQUAMAN #60 Release Date: May 20th, 2020 Written by: KELLY SUE DeCONNICK Art by: MIGUEL MENDONÇA Cover by: ROBSON ROCHA Variant cover by: TYLER KIRKHAM Mera wakes up from her coma more powerful than ever before… but finds her kingdom in absolute peril! Meanwhile, with Ocean Master hell-bent on kidnapping the infant Princess Andy to assert his power Aquaman takes his daughter on the run—as far away from the water as he can manage!

The early details arrive courtesy of DC’s May 2020 solicitations. And as die-hard fans know, this is not the first time that Mera and Aquaman have had a child. In fact, the King and Queen of Atlantis lost their son in the Aquaman: Death of a Prince arc, a storyline so provocative that it actually helped revive the Aquaman solo series itself. Black Manta ruthlessly murdered their infant son, and the heartache shattered Aquaman and Mera’s marriage. Strangely enough, Death of a Prince’s influence on the current story seems to go much deeper than the introduction of a new “Aquababy.” Arthur’s throne being usurped, and him being cast into exile was reintroduced to Rebirth continuity with the Underworld storyline. His abdication of the throne in order to focus solely on his heroic duties also led his journey through “Drowned Earth” to the present. With such a heavy parallel to this classic tale, one has to wonder if the conclusion will ultimately be the same. Will this ocean’s claim another of Arthur’s loved ones? or will the Aquaman family finally get their happily ever after?

Aquaman #60 will arrive in your local comic book shop on May 20th, 2020.
