The DCeased series saved some of its most horrifying moments for last, delivering the moment Aquaman fans were waiting for in the process. And as an added bonus, Tom Taylor and Trevor Hairsine saw fit to make Arthur Curry’s final appearance in DC’s zombie apocalypse not only epic, but a horrifying, nightmare version of one of Jason Momoa’s coolest Aquaman movie moments.
As those who read the entirety of DCeased will already know, all his Atlantean strength and combat skills didn’t prevent Arthur from being killed in the very first pages of the series. Among the first Justice League superheroes to discover humans were being turned into monsters by the Anti-Life Equation, Aquaman was chased from a ship in a bloody storm, descending silently beneath the waves. Dead before even zombie Batman, it seemed Arthur was given a mercy, considering what horrors followed. But instead… he was simply preparing.
The moment arrives in DCeased #5, as the last survivors on Earth are being ferried from the island of Themyscira to escape shuttles. As the ground begins to shake, only Mera seems to know what is coming before it breaks the surface. Aquaman riding his famous Kraken… just completely zombified, as the last nightmare king of the undead Earth.
Commanding an entire Atlantean army of zombified soldiers, the scene actually ends as quickly as it starts for Arthur. In what is easily the most satisfying joke of the entire series, this assault follows the heroes gathering to forge a weapon to kill zombie Superman. A scene in which it is revealed that Batman developed a back-up plan to take down every hero… except for Green Arrow. From a man like Batman, it’s the ultimate insult. But when Arthur Curry emerges on top of an undead Kraken, Green Arrow gets the last laugh – firing a single arrow through the Atlantean’s eye socket, killing him instantly. And with a “F*** you, Batman” of finality, Aquaman and Green Arrow team up to put the Dark Knight in his place. We’re almost sad this nightmare is over.
