Next year there is so far only one DCEU offering for fans to get excited about, but it is definitely drumming up some serious hype! Aquaman, due for release in October 2018, will be a whole new look at the King of Atlantis, with Jason Momoa in the titular role. Momoa will be joined by Amber Heard as Mera, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta. The character has already appeared in the DCEU, and will be returning for this year’s Justice League, but we’re still looking forward to seeing him in the spotlight in 2018.

Earlier this week, it was announced production on the film will start May 22nd, which will be shooting in Australia initially. Now, a casting call released for the production includes what appears to be a new version of the Aquaman synopsis.

Published on casting call site Acting Auditions, the new synopsis is only two sentences long, followed by a list of the stars as well as the names of those involved behind the camera. The rest of the post covers the requirements for actors applying to appear in the film. Here’s the synopsis:

A second variant can be found at the very bottom of the page:

‘Aquaman’ will center on Aquaman as a reluctant ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis who is caught between land dwellers that are always polluting the globe and his own people who are ready to invade the surface.

We have already been given one synopsis for the film, which is almost identical to the two that appear on the casting site. The original wording is: “Aquaman (Momoa) is the King of the Seven Seas. Leader of Atlantis, he is caught between the surface world constantly ravaging the seas and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt. Aquaman is committed to protecting the entire world. This film is part of WB’s shared DC cinematic universe.”

Aquaman is the King of the Seven Seas. This reluctant ruler of Atlantis, caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, is committed to protecting the entire globe.

The main difference between the original version and the casting call synopsis is the inclusion of Aquaman’s description as a “reluctant” ruler. A second difference lies in the way that the synopsis deals with the possibility of an Atlantean attack on the surface world. The original synopsis describes this as a revolt, caused by humanity’s treatment of the oceans, whereas the new one describes it as an invasion. These may seem like very minor differences, but they could have a huge impact on the events of the film. A reluctant ruler behaves very differently than a committed one (perhaps this explains his willingness to drink on the surface and join the Justice League?), and an invasion is offensive, compared to a revolt, which is defensive.

It’s important to remember, of course, that these changes to the synopsis have not been confirmed as official by DC, and it is very possible that the synopsis on the site was written by someone at Acting Auditions. If this is the case, we cannot draw any conclusions about the character of Aquaman or the state of Atlantean/human relations from the word change. However, if the changes are from DC they may suggest an even angrier, unhappier King of Atlantis than we were already expecting.
