Aquaman gets the Honest Trailers treatment in a new video from Screen Junkies. After 2017’s Justice League misfired at the box office, the DC Extended Universe took a year off between films to regroup. Fortunately, it managed to bounce back something fierce with Aquaman, which earned mostly positive reactions from critics and took in a massive $1.15 billion at the global box office. With those kinds of numbers, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. has since gotten to work on not only Aquaman 2 (which is scheduled for 2022), but also a spinoff about the creatures that reside within The Trench.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman follows Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) as he sets out to claim his birthright as the true heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, with the help of the warrior princess Mera (Amber Heard). Of course, there’s a lot more that happens in the film than this misleadingly simple plot synopsis would suggest. As such, Aquaman’s numerous narrative threads are (naturally) one of the various elements that get riffed on in the movie’s official Honest Trailer.

Screen Junkies dropped its Aquaman Honest Trailer online today, March 19, which is a week before the film is scheduled to arrive on DVD, Blu-ray, and related home media formats (it released digitally earlier this month). You can check it out in the space below.

If there was ever any doubt that Zack Snyder made the right call in casting Momoa as Arthur Curry in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, then Wan’s Aquaman movie firmly puts that notion to rest. Indeed, as the Honest Trailer points out, the latter film completes the superhero’s transformation from “the nerd that talks to fish” into a full-blown hunky warrior who’s even capable of making Aquaman’s long-mocked orange and green comic book costume look cool. Wan’s tentpole similarly demonstrates just how visually impressive the character and his world can look in live-action, thanks in no small part to The Conjuring and Furious 7 filmmaker’s efforts behind the camera (in combination with those of countless VFX artists and production team members). The film’s spectacle made it very much a must-see movie last December and helped to buoy Aquaman to unanticipated levels of commercial success, in the process.

Of course, as the Honest Trailer points out, Aquaman can also be overwhelming to watch (in a good way, mostly) because of the sheer amount of story threads, action, and settings that it manages to cram into its runtime. It’s no wonder, then, that Wan wants to take a break and passed the job of directing The Conjuring 3 this year off to someone else, rather than moving right on to another franchise movie before he turns his attention to Aquaman 2. Fortunately, WB and DC clearly realize that he’s an important part of the equation here and are giving Wan plenty of time to recover and (as this video observes) try and figure out how the heck he’s gonna top himself with Arthur Curry’s next big adventure.
