Warner Bros. sets an official Aquaman 2 release date in December 2022, confirming the Aquaman sequel will debut four years after the first film. Jason Momoa debuted as Arthur Curry in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, but the appearance was little more than a glorified cameo. Then, Momoa reprised the role for Snyder’s Justice League in 2017, where he became a fan-favorite as a new take on the aquatic superhero. But it wasn’t until James Wan’s Aquaman hit theaters in late 2018 that fans really got to see Momoa’s version of the superhero.

Wan and Momoa’s solo DC movie was a verifiable hit, with Aquaman reviews ranging from mixed to positive - though they were undoubtedly more positive than reactions to Batman V Superman and Justice League. Further, Aquaman grossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, surpassing all other Worlds of DC films in the process. As a result, it came as no surprise when it was reported that Warner Bros. was already developing Aquaman 2, with Momoa set to return as Arthur Curry. Wan has not yet signed on to direct, but the sequel now has a release date.

THR’s Borys Kit is reporting that Warner Bros. has set Aquaman 2 to hit theaters on Dec. 16, 2022, which will mark almost exactly four years after Aquaman swam into theaters in 2018. Aquaman’s Wan and Peter Safran will produce Aquaman 2, which is currently being scripted by the first film’s co-writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. He wrote the script for Aquaman with Will Beall.

In addition to Aquaman 2, Warner Bros. is looking to expand the underwater world of the aquatic superhero by developing an Aquaman spinoff, The Trench, which is said to be a horror-tinged movie based on the titular realm. The Trench is one of Aquaman’s Seven Kingdoms, which additionally include Arthur’s home of Atlantis, Mera’s (Amber Heard) kingdom of Xebel, the Fishermen, the Brine and the extinct Deserters. Considering the vast underwater world introduced in Aquaman, there’s plenty of ground (or, water) to cover in both a sequel and spinoff. At this time, it’s unclear if any other spinoffs are being considered by Warner Bros. and DC Films.

Still, given the success of Aquaman, fans are perhaps more excited for Aquaman 2, which will put Momoa’s superhero back in the forefront. Since the first film was his official origin story, in which he acquired both King Atlan’s Trident and his classic comic book costume, Aquaman 2 offers the filmmakers a chance to give the fully realized superhero a chance to shine. Though we don’t know what the exact story of the sequel will be, the Aquaman credits scene sets up Black Manta to be a major antagonist to Arthur Curry after being introduced in the first film.

With that said, Aquaman 2 is still in the very early stages of development, with the script currently in progress. And with Aquaman 2 not hitting theaters until late 2022, Warner Bros. has plenty of time to make sure the sequel comes together in a way that will please fans of the first film. Whether that means getting Wan back on board to direct, or bringing in someone new, remains to be seen, but hiring a director may be Warner Bros. next step in developing Aquaman 2 - so fans should keep their eyes peeled for more news.
