Facebook has begun using artificial intelligence to identify those who may be at risk of committing suicide, reports the BBC. The company has long offered a reporting tool for those concerned that posts by a Facebook friend may indicate suicidal thoughts, and it is these reports that have been used to teach the AI system to detect worrying posts. The social network has developed algorithms that spot warning signs in users’ posts and the comments their friends leave in response....

Starting tomorrow, AT&T will be revamping its Mobile Share Value plans by adjusting data tiers and plan prices for new and current subscribers. At the low end, AT&T is consolidating a few data tiers into just two options with different price points. Meanwhile, AT&T’s double digit data tiers are also being reduced, and some subscribers can potentially end up with more data at no extra cost per month or get a better rate on even higher data tiers....

Australia Post has been swamped with work as Victorians do more online shopping in lockdown than usual, and COVID-19 restrictions impact the delivery process. On Sunday morning, a photo taken inside Australia Post’s Sunshine distribution warehouse revealed the high amount of deliveries the post service is dealing with. Michelle Skehan, Australia Post’s General Manager of Corporate Affairs, admitted on 3AW today that the photo was “a little bit terrifying.” Ms Skehan claimed that online shopping was “booming” in Victoria, up by an estimated 30%, and that Australia Post was having a more challenging time dealing with the pandemic this time than during prior lockdowns....

Airbnb has been working on artificial intelligence software to identify personality traits in a bid to calculate the risk of guests. The service has seen an increase lately in bookings being used for parties and other unwanted activities. This previously led to Airbnb looking at ways to combat the problem, including personality assessments. For many, Airbnb has become the default option when looking for a place to stay. More recently, there has been an increase in news reports of how the room-booking service is being used by some as more than just a bed for the night....

According to a posting on the Apple Developer boards this afternoon, Apple will be resetting iCloud Backup data on Thursday, September 22nd. We believe Apple is performing this reset for the release of iOS 5 GM, which will be released around the same time of the reset. iOS 5 GM will be the last release before iOS 5’s official debut in early October, like we previously reported. This reset doesn’t include data from mail, contacts, calendars, reminders, or bookmarks....

Australians have reported being swamp scam with calls that appear to come from a legitimate agency or even from their phone number. It’s known as “call spoofing,” and it’s the latest tactic cybercriminals use to persuade mobile phone users to accept a call. According to Telstra, call spoofing has increased considerably during the pandemic, as Australians spend more time on their phones and more time looking for official communication from their service providers....

Apple A-series and M1 chipmaker TSMC is preparing to raise more than half a billion dollars to fund an Arizona chip plant and more as it responds to the global chip shortage. President Biden recently urged TSMC to step up production as US companies are being hit hard by the shortage… Taipei Times reports: Part of the plan for that money is to build a US factory in Arizona. Those plans were first announced back in May of last year....

The Apple Watch, originally launched in nine countries, hits seven more today – with a further rollout on July 17th. Apple has so far added the July 17th date to its websites in the Netherlands, Sweden and Thailand. The countries going live today include Italy, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland and Taiwan … After the initial online-only launch, Apple added a Reserve & Pickup system for launch countries earlier this month....

The nation’s largest carrier is out with a new way for customers to save money this holiday season. AT&T announced a new promotional discount, offering $100 off an LTE iPad (or any tablet) with a two-year contract agreement. A customer will be required to sign up for one of the data plans offered: 250MB for $15, 3GB for $30, or 5GB for $50 a month. Customers also have the choice to include the new iPad in their Mobile Share data plan for an extra $10 a month....
